I don't think anyone is saying that a Maxtor drive will always fail. There are those of us who have owned a lot of hard drives in the past and of all the hard drives some of us have had the coincidence of a particular brand being the most failing.

I'm not sure why some of you are getting emo defensive over the fact this thread is singling out Maxtor drives. Do you somehow feel that it falls back you personally?

>50% failure rate is still more than you should be defending.
The idea of any hi-fi system is to reproduce the source material as faithfully as possible, and to deliberately add distortion to everything you hear (due to amplifier deficiencies) because it sounds 'nice' is simply not high fidelity. If that is what you want to hear then there is no problem with that, but by adding so much additional material (by way of harmonics and intermodulation) you have a tailored sound system, not a hi-fi. - Rod Elliot, ESP

My 80GB Maxtor lasted for 3 years. The only reason I replaced it is because I needed a bigger one. It still works, it's just not being used any more.

I've had 4 Spinpoint F1s die on me. Those are usually known for their reliability. Must have gotten a bad batch or something

4 dead Hitachis for me. All of them came as the default drives in my various lappies

The point being is that while you so happily single out Maxtor as a shit company, a lot of people disagree with you. A lot of products fail and it doesn't solely mean the company that made it is shit. I would however agree that Maxtor is a cheaper alternative and therefore might be less reliable at times, not that I have any knowledge of this.

A better question for you to ask would be, "Ever had a hd that's failed ? if so which company."

Maxtor is not even cheaper than other companies. There are Seagate, WD and Samsung alternatives with better performance and reliability so I see no reason to gamble with Maxtor drives.

Youy have no idea how depressing sight it is to see a pile of Maxtor drives every day when you do the RMA shit in some PC store.

edit: the first Samsung F1 batch was faulty. The drives start getting bad sectors.

Did you know that most DiamondMAX 9 drives have a faulty motor driver, which literally goes up in flames if you cycle power too fast?

That isn't my definition of a good hard drive.

I expect he did.

In any case, talk to anyone who has worked in the IT repairs industry (like me for example), they'll tell you they see 2-3 times as many failures on Maxtor drives as on other brands. They're in the same league as the old IBM Deathstars......
