A friend of mine is building a new computer, but he hasn't been keeping up with all the new tech, so I offered to make a post for him on here.

-He said his budget is between $1000 and $2000, though the closer to $1000 it is, the better.
-No plans on overclocking.
-No need for any harddrives (already has plenty and if needed, will upgrade later).
-No optical drives needed (will upgrade later if needed).
-No OS needed.
-Case isn't a priority, but "will be considered". (Maybe a case + psu combo?)

Here are some parts someone else had told him to check out. Maybe you'll use these in your recommendation, maybe you won't.

Intel Core i7 920 Nehalem 2.66GHz

CORSAIR DOMINATOR 6GB (3 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3

EVGA 132-BL-E758-A1 LGA 1366 Intel X58 ATX Intel Motherboard

Thanks, bf2s tech section!

I would probably get this.

I am not a great with tech stuff though, but I think it might be good. No reviews though, so not really sure.

Edit:   Apparently also able to use DDR3, I assume that is better than DDR2???

This is literally all I know about this, just read it.

Sure, if you want his computer to blow up in a few months.

Cheaper mobo will do more than fine if he doesn't do some nuts OC. Go for Asus P6T.

Enermax Modu82+ 625w PSU

Is he going to game a lot? If he is, GTX 260 C216 55nm SLi/GTX 295. If not just one GTX 275/HD 4890.

Noctua NH-U12P SE1366. Even if he is not going to OC, he will apppreciate silence.

Guess I should clarify. Obviously not a case with a built-in PSU, but I meant if there's a combo deal from Newegg, which there usually is (e.g. buy this case and that power supply and get $20 off).

Didn't see any good combo deals on newegg.

Yes, he's going to game a lot.

I'll definitely check out everyone's suggestions and forward them, thanks!

Why is he not gonna overclock?

Tell him how easy it is, and what can come out of it. My friend just got that processor and had it OC'd to 3.9. He's also new to overclocking.

If don't you have enough cash to rebuild if it dies/screws up everything, you're fucked.  (I know the margin of error is slim, but it's still there)

This is what i would recommend. I know people will probably say "Why the HD 4890 instead of GTX260 216" But personally i've seen the benchmarks and the 4890 convincingly beats the 260 (216) in every test. and the small price increase seemed worth it to me... but if you (or your friend) is a fan of nVidia feel free to get a 260 or similar. I put the cooler in assuming u could convince him to overclock lol.

Price: $1276
Price after main in rebates: $1226
(And u get HAWX and a 8GB USB free )
(waits to get flamed)

Personally I go with ATi, but my friend is an Nvidia fan. Doesn't mean I'll try and convince him otherwise though

the S1366 noctua, although a great performer, is a little pricey imo.  even though you get two fans along with the S1366 mounting kit.  i think if you get the S755 version, you get one fan, which will be sufficient since he's not overclocking.  you'll save around $20 or so, and you can just get the S1366 mounting kit shipped to you for free by noctua.  if he just wants to save some money.

Haha, the thing is, at the moment both are great, their products are very close (unlike some previous years)

EDIT: at haffey:
sure, if he wants to save some money, but if he convinces him to overclock then i think the 1366 would be the way to go..

In my opinion the Noctua gives awsome bang for buck. one noctua fan costs a bit over 17€ here, and the cooler comes with two. You use the other one as case fan if you want.

i think so too, but not the S1366 version.

i doubt we're going to convince him to overclock and therefore the extra fan won't really be helping all that much.  whatever
