Seems to me that not long ago the default monitor would be 4:3 or even 5:4, but now it's definitely 16:10/9. Games have gone that way too, some games, for example Assassin's Creed and Mirrors Edge will only display in 16:10/9 without some modification. I'm kinda stumped as to why it went this way, is it because in general humans can see more horizontal than vertical? So it makes things more realistic? Or is it something to do with horizontal refresh rates and displaying modes?

I'm confused.

Where are your eyes positioned?
The idea of any hi-fi system is to reproduce the source material as faithfully as possible, and to deliberately add distortion to everything you hear (due to amplifier deficiencies) because it sounds 'nice' is simply not high fidelity. If that is what you want to hear then there is no problem with that, but by adding so much additional material (by way of harmonics and intermodulation) you have a tailored sound system, not a hi-fi. - Rod Elliot, ESP

Also, find me a cheap widescreen CRT.

Nowadays, widescreen LCD panels are way cheaper to manufacter, more closely fit a human's field of vision and better emulate the shape of a theater screen all at the same time.

So unless you wear a pair of these:

Be happy.

So I was right, it's to do with the FOV then.

Are widescreen LCDs cheaper to manufacture than 4:3 LCDs?

He's referring to your eyes being spread apart like a widescreen being spread you doofus.

Widescreen has only gotten as cheap as it has because it was so widely adopted by so many people. If it had remained a niche technology (like much of the mobile computing market), it would have remained more expensive. Simple economics, my friend.

Well, yes, your eyes are spaced apart, but y our focus zone is very much central.

My best guess is that there's just simply more action to be captured horizontally than vertically.

Then again, if we want to resort to biology:

wiki wrote:

The normal human visual field extends to approximately 60 degrees nasally (toward the nose, or inward) in each eye, to 100 degrees temporally (away from the nose, or outwards), and approximately 60 degrees above and 75 below the horizontal meridian
Horizontal: 160 degrees, Vertical: 135 degrees

Ratio
160:135 = 1.18518
4:3 = 1.33333
16:9 = 1.77777
I need around tree fiddy.

I dunno what I prefer anymore. I used to prefer 4:3 as my own monitor was like that and I wasn't used to ws monitors everyone else started getting. Now after few months with ws I don't really miss 4:3. Much because most games these days support ws and scaling of T220 is pretty good for old games that don't.

I have a 17" running 1280x1024. I often wish I either had a wide screen monitor or two monitors side by side.

It'd be impractical to stack two monitors on top of each other. So it's either wider or nothing.

If I set it to that then everything becomes stretched vertically. 1024x768 looks like wide screen to me.

CRT's are just about always 4:3 and thus look better if you keep the res at 4:3. 5:4 will work without problems though.

I could never go back to a square screen. I am too used to having multiple windows open, and in games having the HUD/chat stuff off to the side.

Widescreen ftw.
