I could never go back to a square screen. I am too used to having multiple windows open, and in games having the HUD/chat stuff off to the side.

Widescreen ftw.
Omg

I just realised

5:4 prevents all that stuff

Quick, someone, buy me a widescreen.

not fun when your PC's worst "bottleneck" is the 1280x1024 crap monitor
I don't see the problem with it, 1280x1024 looks nice enough.

because PC's arent just for gaming. Wider screens make doing work easier, make watching video better, are more aesthetically pleasing. and some more reasons

I can barely live with 1280x1024. Too narrow for proper multitasking, and also too short for proper multitasking. Even 1440x900 is superior.
The idea of any hi-fi system is to reproduce the source material as faithfully as possible, and to deliberately add distortion to everything you hear (due to amplifier deficiencies) because it sounds 'nice' is simply not high fidelity. If that is what you want to hear then there is no problem with that, but by adding so much additional material (by way of harmonics and intermodulation) you have a tailored sound system, not a hi-fi. - Rod Elliot, ESP

Because once you've gotten used to a 26" 1920x1200 screen, 1280x1024 is nothing but tiny.

Sometimes I find an old screenshot in 1280x1024, or even 1440x900 and it's amazing just how small they are

My best guess is that there's just simply more action to be captured horizontally than vertically.

Then again, if we want to resort to biology:

The normal human visual field extends to approximately 60 degrees nasally (toward the nose, or inward) in each eye, to 100 degrees temporally (away from the nose, or outwards), and approximately 60 degrees above and 75 below the horizontal meridian
Horizontal: 160 degrees, Vertical: 135 degrees

Ratio
160:135 = 1.18518
4:3 = 1.33333
16:9 = 1.77777
but we use two eyes = ~180 degrees horizontal FOV.

180:135 = 1.33333
4:3        = 1.33333

Id like three screens, one in the middle for normal tasks/games, and two on the sides for more space (and to balance it out )

once upon a midnight dreary, while i pron surfed, weak and weary, over many a strange and spurious site of ' hot  xxx galore'. While i clicked my fav'rite bookmark, suddenly there came a warning, and my heart was filled with mourning, mourning for my dear amour, " 'Tis not possible!", i muttered, " give me back my free hardcore!"..... quoth the server, 404.

I don't deny the fact that Widescreen is sexy.. I really want a good widescreen monitor. But lack of funds sets me back a bit in this dept.

Oh well, 1280x2048 will have to do

I always thought the widescreen thing was to give a sense of peripheral vision. Plus, your range of vision seems much larger side-to-side than top-to-bottom. (And no, I'm not Asian).
