I just installed it. Are there any useless features I should take out?

UAC

Start > Control Panel > Search UAC > Turn dat bitch off.

(It's the little pop-up box that dims your screen asking if you really want to install the thing you just asked it to install).

Windows Firewall, Windows Defender, but I guess you've already done that if you have an iota of knowledge.

If you have a weaker PC or you prefer performance over looks then turning Aero off should be in order

Nothing.  It's all useful for Windows to operate.  I could only see Aero being turned off.  And the reason it's a memory hog is because of SuperFetch which speeds Vista up.  It's a good thing that it hogs memory.

I imagine there are many useful components in Windows Vista. Unfortunately, I don't know anyone who uses the more extraneous ones. Like sidebar...never seen it on anyone's screen.

Extranneous ones?  I don't even notice the features, if you're referring to UAC or Windows Defender.

what was that supposed to mean? Vista is designed  to cache a lot of stuff in ram

I was going to make the exact same thread. I did however turn UAC off in the first few minutes after mobo and vid drivers.

You don't have to do a lot of digging to find Vista bloatware that is hardly used but consumes significant resources. And Superfetch doesn't speed Vista up if you don't have the hardware for it. I use it (SF) on office PC's, but that's it.

I love superfetch. I'm using it on all of my PCs even the one with the SSD. Superfetch does slow you down slightly after a boot until everything is cached but once it is opening all that standard stuff is much faster. I don't see a reason to disable it.

On new installs I
- Disable UAC
- Disable Hibernation
- Disable Win Defender
- Enable automatic login
- (sometimes) disable the page file
- (sometimes) Search
- Tick OS boot information in msconfig
once upon a midnight dreary, while i pron surfed, weak and weary, over many a strange and spurious site of ' hot  xxx galore'. While i clicked my fav'rite bookmark, suddenly there came a warning, and my heart was filled with mourning, mourning for my dear amour, " 'Tis not possible!", i muttered, " give me back my free hardcore!"..... quoth the server, 404.

How do you enable automatic login and do the last three things you in your list?

Why couldn't you just ask how to do the last 4 things in his list?

type

Code:

control userpasswords2
into a command line and check automatically log in.

Disabling the Page File and Search only really makes sense on SSDs

For the last thing type

Code:

msconfig
into a command line, go to the boot tab and tick OS boot information

Alright, now whenever I leave my computer running byitself(while downloading something)it shuts down after 30 minutes.

Any ideas?

Not necessarily hibernation. Could just be standby.

There's a major difference between suspend to ram and suspend to disk
