SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – More than 30,000 people have been ordered to flee a wildfire that burned a five-mile-long front above wealthy coastal communities by Friday, after another hot, windy night in which the fire chief said "all hell broke loose."

Towering columns of brown smoke roiled off the face of the Santa Ynez Mountains after a fierce overnight battle as the 3,500-acre blaze repeated its pattern of relative calm in daylight and explosive behavior when evening winds arrive. It had been estimated at only about 1,300 acres Thursday afternoon.

"Literally last night, all hell broke loose," Santa Barbara city Fire Chief Andrew DiMizio said. Officials predicted Friday night would bring the same destructive mix of hot weather and strong wind gusts.

Yes, controlled burns should be used to thin out vegetation. However, it's kind of a moot point now that the fire is threatening communities.

I think the people that live there don't want their $1 million plus homes to burn. That's one of the most expensive areas to live in the country. Reminds me of the fires they had a few years back up there, except this one is waaay late for a California fire. I feel for those people - hopefully they can get that fire under control.

Dude, those crazy fires you guys experienced down under are an annual occurance in California. We have a "wildfire season", and every year without avail fires get out of control. Part of the reason the fires are so dangerous here is the Santa Ana winds that fuel them. We lose around 1 million acres to fire a year.

I'm just an 1.5 hours north of SB, up here in San Luis Obispo, Ca. We're getting a lot of the "refugees" from the fires. College towns tend to have connections.

A guy I work with is in the fire academy up here. His whole class is going down next week to create perimeter fire lines.

This one is early for the season. Santa Ana's haven't set themselves yet, and there is still moisture around most of the states vegetation. LPNF is surprised that it has gotten this large so quickly. Fire season in Cali usually doesn't pick up till June, and gets really bad near fall. ('07)

Not trying to diminish the scale of these fires. But we back burn about 1 million Hectares (2.4 million acres) annually and then still get an average of another 1 million Hectares of wild bushfires.

There were a lots of minor factors in the devastation of the Victoria bushfires but the main one was the wind. Up to 150Kmh (category 2 hurricane) wind gusts gave people little time to react and many homes and lives that would have usually been saved were lost. Also to put things into perspective at the same time the Victorian fires were burning there was at least 40 others burning around the country (some much bigger) which got little to no media coverage.

I hope everyone gets out alive and I'm sure if things get as bad as they were here, many Australian firefighters will offer their support as the Americans did for us.

The suburbs around LA are highly congested. Many of it's neighborhoods average homes 1 million plus (costly sacrifice). I think this is relative to how much they can back burn.

The population density is the issue up here. Australia burns down every year, much like California does. I think its cool that we send FF's down there to help. I don't think the thick tangle of shit that is the US Bureaucracy would allow Australian FF's to come here and help.

The unions basically control the state government. Unless your a federal employee like me and you dont get paid shit

I understand LA has a much higher population density, but I live less then 20km from the CBD of Sydney and on average every 2 or so years fires get within visual range. As of yet we have not had to evacuate though we do know people who live less then 5 km away that have lost there homes. The fires still threaten houses, lives and even major cities every year and as such back burning still takes places less then a km from peoples homes.

Admittedly I'm out of my element. I am just guessing as to the reasons for back burning (or not) in some places. We get fires here in Fl but nothing near that scale. I'll be happy to chime in with Hurricane knowledge when the topic of natural disasters switches to something a little more local .

Whatever happened to the guy who was suspected of starting your fires last summer? Was he prosecuted?
