I see too many threads on here relating to American problems, so I though I'de start one relating to the UK. Americans, feel free to chip in with programmes in the US that could have fingers pointed at for problematic teens.

Skins is a programme following a group of English kids that epitomises drugs, excessive drinking and violent behaviour. Shameless follows a troubled Mancunian family, lead by an alcoholic father. I've seen all three series of Skins, but never got into Shameless.

I think a lot of the problems with today's youth can stem from the stuff they see on TV, and Shameless has it all, unsafe sex, drug abuse (ecstasy, coke, weed) and binge drinking.

So I pose the question to you, do you think that content like this can have an effect on impressionable kids?

Whenever I would do drugs I only did it to be like the characters I saw on T.V. so yes I would blame T.V. shows for our youth.

Fine, I would say that the shows are actually influenced by culture but there are a very few youth who take it to heart and attempt to follow what they see on T.V.  but these kids who are easily influenced into crime and drugs are already impressionable enough that they would have went into it without having to watch a T.V. show.

I think they have an influence, but they aren't the core problem.

Shitty parents means the TV becomes the parent. So it's a combination of poor parenting + shitty things for kids to turn to.

I watch South Park, the Simpsons, Futurama and Family Guy all the time and haven't turned into a cartoon character.

Skins and Shameless are both funny, but both are byproducts of your shitty chav culture, not the other way around.
Whoa... Can't believe these forums are still kicking.

Or you know, perhaps the TV show is merely replicating what life is like for a lot of people, in order to remain relevant. It seems a bit stupid to pretend it isn't happening.

Ive been in Bars in Manchester like the Jockey from Shameless. In fact, the people in some parts of Manchester are allot worse. Ive seen some crazy shit in that city.
Skins is way over the top. Although I led a similar life while in College. I got so high once I slept through my Mechanical Engineering exam. I still look back and wonder how the fuck I got educated.

I'll tell you whats to blame, it ain't the TV. Its this fucking nanny state we live in. Kids expect to be looked after and have no national pride whatsoever. When I was young, if I fucked around I would either be lifted by the cops, taken to the station and have the shit beat out of me, or worse you would be lifted by the IRA.
The cops are now taking on the role of parents and the parents expect the state to care for their kids more than they do themselves.
If a kid commits multiple crimes, then their parents should be tried for them too. That would fix allot of shit.

Nope. These issues have been around way before these programs - their intention is infact to parody modern inner city life. Shameless S1+2 are actually pretty close to the truth.

And yeah, some areas of manchester are just fucking mental I love the city, it's so genuine.

I've never actually watched Skins, or Shameless and I don't think I know anyone that does, and I can't imagine all the Chav lot watch them types of shows either, cos they're not the type to watch them sort of shows. Mostly those sort of people watch MTV/MTV Base/Channel U all the time.

There's loads of reasons to blame why our generation is fucked up for the most part. If there was one big influence to single out it would be the music industry

It's like the chicken and the egg, which came first? Seriously though, it's the hen, the poor parents affecting the kids, who affect the TV shows. Or maybe they took some ideas from the US's hippie/burnout culture.

The real issue here is why the kids are so pathetic that they choose to model their lives around some moronic show.  All in all, this generation of youth is a waste of oxygen, good luck in the future Europe, you raised a generation of fuck ups.

They havn't lol...

I'd say things such as inner city school failings, increase in drugs available and peer presure would have more to do with the problems.

And anyway, this generation is mostly fine. every generation finds something to bitch about.

'this generation' has the highest proportion of kids going to university since records iirc, so i wouldnt write us off as a bunch of wasters.

sure theres people content to sit on their arse, as is with any social group. I'd say more the expansion of media makes issues like this more obvious and in the public eye. Before, they were largely ignored.

Skins and Shameless are not the type of programs my lot watch. Top Gear, Sports, mainly Sports, some watch shows like Apprentice and then those American comedy shows/animation etc.. you know, you act like not watching Skins and Shameless is a massive thing, I hadn't even heard of the shows until last year. I dunno, maybe it is for you guys, you're that one year below us, I can honestly say I don't know anyone that watches those two shows. Infact I find British drama shows to be awful anyway, Doctor Who etc.. actually drama shows/soaps in general suck. There's plenty of people out there that don't like that shit, let alone teen dramas. I mean for fuck sake, TEEN DRAMAS.

Sort out my social group? Shut the fuck up, I'm getting pissed off at some of you cunts, you don't even know half the story about my personal life yet you all like to talk like you know everything, just from little excerpts from fucking Surgeons, why don't you just look at yourselves instead of chatting shit about others that you don't even know. Fuck off

True, i hadnt considered that. Education is the lynchpin to any effective society. imho it should be 100% compulsory for kids to attend til 18, perhaps with the parents facing consequences if their kids fail to go. School needs to be relevant though, otherwise the target audience (kids) will bore of it, and not actually try. No idea how to get to that stage though. Cash incentives (we have a scheme over here called EMA) work to the point of making the kids come to class, but perhaps if it was tied into exam results kids would acutally pay attention.

sorry about the rambling, im on one of these tiny acer laptops
