Hey Guys,

Been trying to help fix my mom's laptop.  Would appreciate some of your inputs

So it's a Toshiba laptop with the infamous Matshita CD-ROMs.  The CD-ROM went dead awhile ago and after doing a little search, i found out this model of the CD drive was known to have my problem and Toshiba hasn't released a fix yet...

So later on a few months later the computer screen just goes black after you see the windows loading screen.  I can see my cursor and move it but thats basically it.  I've read that  reformatting works correctly but here's the problem.  I can't see the screen, Safemode doesnt help, CD rom doesn't work so i cant try a linux livecd.  I have tried  using a USB bootable version of the latest Knoppix but it seems like the laptop just refuses to start up on it.  IT does though work on my other computers...  Now even if I could reformat it what about the CD-ROM? How will i install windows? Any ideas?
