The Times article described the Los Angeles Unified School District's "housed" employees: About 160 teachers and others have been removed from schools with full pay and benefits while they wait for misconduct cases to be resolved. Kim has been housed the longest.
Two years and millions of dollars later he still gets full salary, a paid full time personal assistant and does nothing for the money.

His behavior was decent until he got tenure, then he started grabassing and saying things he shouldn't to kids. So the lesson here is get a teaching certificate, wait for tenure, do something to get in trouble and chill at home collecting full salary.

160 teachers are being " housed " with full pay while arnold says he is going to lay off fire fighters.

For seven years, the Los Angeles Unified School District has paid Matthew Kim a teaching salary of up to $68,000 per year, plus benefits.

His job is to do nothing.

Every school day, Kim's shift begins at 7:50 a.m., with 30 minutes for lunch, and ends when the bell at his old campus rings at 3:20 p.m. He is to take off all breaks, school vacations and holidays, per a district agreement with the teacher's union. At no time is he to be given any work by the district or show up at school.

He has never missed a paycheck.

In the jargon of the school district, Kim is being "housed" while his fitness to teach is under review. A special education teacher, he was removed from Grant High School in Van Nuys and assigned to a district office in 2002 after the school board voted to fire him for allegedly harassing teenage students and colleagues. In the meantime, the district has spent more than $2 million on him in salary and legal costs.

Last week, Kim was ordered to continue this daily routine at home. District officials said the offices for "housed" employees were becoming too crowded.

About 160 teachers and other staff sit idly in buildings scattered around the sprawling district, waiting for allegations of misconduct to be resolved.

This is what you get when it is only teachers, union hacks, police and firefighters that show up to vote. We had a 16% turnout in the last election, which is likely made up of 90% state workers. They vote themselves more and more, never counting the cost or pondering if their choices are good for society as a whole.
It is all about the state worker, not about the state.

This madness will proceed until California has to declare BK.

The state parasites will look around and realize that the census numbers are WAY off; this state is made up of 75% low income, low skilled ILLEGAL ALIENS. These illiterate peasants will never generate enough tax revenues to support the state workers plush lifestyle, and the whole system is falling down.

Great, California teachers paid to sit around and wait while teachers in Florida are getting cut left and right. My gf has "almost" been laid off 2 times in the past month due to budget cuts and she teaches in an area that's already in a shortage.

The teachers resist any sort of merit based system. They are well and truly out of control atm.

Eh...  It wouldn't be hard to elect someone that would ditch tenure.  There's obviously public support for the move.

The Teacher's Union is wayyyy to powerful to let that happen.  They run political ads all the time for propositions and candidates they like.

Isn't tenure more of a school issue than a political one?

Except the school systems get their money from the State, making it a big time political issue. Plus, I think school superintendents/supervisors are appointed.

Personally, I'm all for getting rid of tenure. in 17 years of schooling, ome of the crappiest teachers I've had were rotting behind a desk because on tenure protection. They bring absolutely nothing new to the table, and even the old shit they claim to cling too doesn't work.

If you're a teacher but teach nothing, that is the definition of failure. And failure shouldn't get paid.

I agree.  There is a certain professor here where other profs wonder aloud just what he would have to do to get fired.

unions... say no more...   I know some really good teachers who think the school system is assinine... teachers that suck that can't be fired... sad
and a big part of why the schools are pumping out entitled idiots...
