My friend (and myself as well) are looking for new cameras. He's open to DSLRs and he's got some options, but we're also looking for good point-and-shoots. I want a camera that performs very well in low-light conditions and that favors quality over megapixel amount. It seems that most manufacturers (at least for point-and-shoots) care more about having the biggest megapixel count than about having high-quality pictures.

The Lumix LX3 has been suggested to me by a couple people. Any other ideas?

I have a Sony Cybershot, a DSC W120 and I love it. The pictures come out friggin great. Shooting at night is a bit tough on far away objects, but that's the same with any camera if you aren't using a tripod or a stable surface.

The Canon Powershot series is also really good. Had an old A130 that was really nice.

Canon has always had a nice compact camera sortiment. Even their cheap run-off-2-AAs cameras have decent picture.
The idea of any hi-fi system is to reproduce the source material as faithfully as possible, and to deliberately add distortion to everything you hear (due to amplifier deficiencies) because it sounds 'nice' is simply not high fidelity. If that is what you want to hear then there is no problem with that, but by adding so much additional material (by way of harmonics and intermodulation) you have a tailored sound system, not a hi-fi. - Rod Elliot, ESP

My parent's have had 2 Lumix's and they're great. The photo quality is really good for a point and shoot camera if you ask me.

Here's a couple examples.

Just checked the site and it looks like they don't make it anymore
