Canon Powershot SX 200

I can get the camera at my local store for £249 with the cashback offer, i had a look around for other makes in the similar price bracket. Couldn't see a great deal but then i'm not camera savvy. I'll spend a bit more and happily spend less upon some helpful recommendations

Doesn't look as sharp as some of its peers in the same price bracket i saw in the local store but i'm after some quality and options etc...

For a bit more you could probably get a DSLR, but depending on where you're taking the camera, it may not be practical. I still believe that's too much for a point and shoot camera.

I was under the impression the camera i found was a lot more than a point and shoot, i had point a shoot before and yes they served a very basic purpose. I had looked at DSLR and i really can't afford to invest money into one, i've been keeping an eye out for second hand tho but not overly successful

The camera is for general use, holidays, days out, local area countryside etc.... Sometimes i just walking/riding around and i see something which makes me stand still and look and i just want to capture those views at relative expense to my desire to take photographs for recreational purposes.

It is a bit more than a point and shoot, but same category i think.

You should ask Kmarion & McMinty for camera advice, they're the photography experts

Aw, naw, that's a point and shoot. Look at the amount of buttons.

This is more than a point and shoot camera. Notice all the buttons.

S'how it works, bro. More buttons = less P&S.

Well the story goes, i walked in the shop with a price of £150/£180 in mind. Seeing this would get me quite a shitty little low optical zoom fully auto functions, i spoke to the guy and he showed me the SX 200. Offering 12x Optical Zoom and the option to customize my shots further than what i can with a £150 camera.

I've been and looked at DSLR's from the same store just now (online btw) and they start at £269 for a Sony Alpha. Any good?

So in a way, i'm already buying up from what i first imagined i would. But from what you guys say and what i've just been and looked at, camera's only start to get serious at around £350 right?

Yeah that'd be the price range for a good 'un.

Otherwise all you're good for is party photos.

Canon compacts tend to give you quite a lot of options for compacts. The only thing I miss in my old thing is manual focus.
The idea of any hi-fi system is to reproduce the source material as faithfully as possible, and to deliberately add distortion to everything you hear (due to amplifier deficiencies) because it sounds 'nice' is simply not high fidelity. If that is what you want to hear then there is no problem with that, but by adding so much additional material (by way of harmonics and intermodulation) you have a tailored sound system, not a hi-fi. - Rod Elliot, ESP

If it's not a hobby, you really don't need a DSLR.

Exactly, like the equivalent to putting a GTX 295 in your grandmother's computer (max excluded)

I'd agree, but at the same time if you're looking to take photos of sports or racing or something like that, a Point&Shoot isn't going to cut it.

Thanks for all your help, i've decided on a Panasonic Lumix TZ7 in the end, more expensive than the Canon but a superior camera. Shoots HD Video as well as having one of the best lenses in its category, really looking forward to taking some snaps
