North America is out.  I want to live in jolly old England.

A few of you probably remember I was planning on moving to Los Angeles.  It turns out since our economy is such shite, my company isn't transferring people out west.  I was thinking about quitting and moving anyway, but the job market is terrible there, so that's out.

So I started thinking...

If I'm going to quit my job at some point in the relatively near future...why would I move to California?  Why wouldn't I move somewhere I'd really enjoy moving to?  Somewhere foreign...yet still comfortable.

Anyway, there's an issue with that.  Apparently as of November, the EU has passed new immigration laws.  I guess it's not as easy as applying for a work permit, moving there, and finding a job.

Has anyone done this before and can give me some tips?  Or is anyone familiar with the immigration laws and can help me out?

Honestly dude, it's really hard these days. I'm looking at doing the opposite in the next few years, and really, unless you've got a company backing you it's very, very hard. What you want to do is find an American company that will put you in a job overseas; if you just pop over and start job hunting you don't stand a chance.

Yeah, I'm realizing this.

I mean, how fucking stupid is it?  We live in the "free world" and all I want to do is move countries.  I don't even care if I have a super glamorous job.  Hell, I'll wait tables and pull pints for all I care.

Yeah man, it really blows. You'd think with all the special relationship bullshit, the US and the UK would be happy to trade citizens providing they're going to work. It should be so simple; apply for a job, get the paperwork, apply for a visa with said paperwork, move.

Exactly.  Instead, the EU gets special permissions and I'm stuck here twiddling my thumbs.  I mean, I know we seceded from you guys but fuck, I want back in!

We should just trade spots.

If you think the economy is shit in the US, enjoy getting your income butt fucked by VAT in the UK. I am not up to speed on the European economies, but they can't be leagues better than the US.

Besides they all talk weird over there!

tax is tax, they'll find a way to butt fuck you whatever the situation is.  Trust me i am working at HMRC at the moment.

and OT i could go to the US easily with my firm...the morbid fascination with guns over there worries me though.

but to compensate, I'm pretty sure average income is higher in the UK.

Also, isn't the UK one of the toughest hit European countries (economy-wise)?

Honestly, I think it gets more publicity than it really should.  I live in Chicago, one of the most populous cities in the US and I've never seen a gun on the street other than on an officer.  I mean, that's not to say people don't carry them...and it's also not to say there are bad parts of the city where I never go near, but it's just not a HUGE issue.

Though, when I lived in Canada, you never even heard about shootings...whereas here, it kind of is an everyday occurrence.

Minimum wage is the same in the UK as it is in the US.

...the only difference is that in the UK it's in pounds and here it's in dollars.  So you make about 1.5x as much.

The U.K is easy to get into if you're English speaking and have qualifications.

If/When you move here, go North (Manchester area) it's vibrant and is quickly becoming the 2nd cap without the tremendous living costs living near London incurs.

Tax is high, but most everything social is free. A nice and welcome trade off.

Manchester is actually where I'm looking.  While I'd like to live in London, it's just too expensive.  I've heard good things about Manchester...and the cost of living is much more manageable.

I speak English (though it's Americanized/bastardized ), but I'm not sure what qualifications would be required.

As far as qualifications go, something reputable in the field you want to move into. I can ask my mum, she'd prob know more (works high end uk.gov) if you want.

Manchester is without a doubt my favourite city in the UK, bar possibly Edinburgh.

It's clean and honest, and so so so many multinationals are moving in because of the lower costs and all that.

Plus you'll be near my england home!

This is going to sound terrible...

But I don't even really have a "field".  Nor do I really care.  I'd be perfectly happy with moving there and waiting tables or something stupid and basic.  Really, I just want to move there and enjoy living there.

Sure enough you can move over without particular cause, but the checks with immigration will be more lengthy. What education do you have?

Bear in mind when it comes to the EU, over here we generally ignore what they say.

Some uni.  Had to withdraw after I ran into financial issues.

I plan on going back once I get the money.  I was thinking about applying for a student visa and trying to get in that way, but I still don't have the funds quite yet.

Student Visa's worth it. Get yourself to Manchester, or even Man Met and do a mickey deg. After that convert to a full resident. So so so many jobs going up in the North it's untrue.

eg even in this eco downtime i've been offered 5 jobs for the summer without hesitation.
