  • The adventures of a PSU, A.K.A how I might need a new one

Compressed story:

1. Thermaltake Toughpower PSU's fan starts making a shitton of noise, it's warmer than usual
2. I open the PSU up and replace the fan
3. Heat a little better but still present, even on medium fan speed
4. I get invited to a game of TF2
5. I turn the new fan up to gale force wind speed
6. 30 minutes of TF2 later my PC turns off, PSU is burning hot

7. After much testing it turns out my PSU died, luckily without taking out anything with it. It was 2,5 years old, so it led a full life, at least. I've tried it in another PC and it simply doesn't turn on.

Can I fix it?
What kind of new PSU should I be looking at for this setup? i7 920, 2xHDD, 2xDVD, 4gb ram, 8800gt, audigy 4. preferably good enough for me to not have to upgrade the PSU again for a while yet.

When replacing the PSU fan you need to make sure the replacement fan has similar or better specs enough to keep the PSU cool enough, or it will burn out quickly.

Obviously you now replaced a more powerful fan to less powerful. > troubles (Or the PSU was already on its way to hell and u just made it do so faster)

Best bang for buck in PSUs is the Corsair TX850W. It has solid cables.

If you need a modular  one, I suggest to take a look at Enermax Modu82+ 625w / Revolution85+ 850w / one of the new Corsair HX750/850W

That is if u plant o upgrade to GT300/RV870 or considerably high end gfx cards.

If you don't plan to do that:

Corsair HX520W/620W

edit: What is your budget?

I replaced the stock POS with a silverstone FM123, which is considerably better. At first the heat was actually less, but it just kept getting worse. The FM123 on full speed is much, much stronger than the stock fan, and if that couldn't cool a PSU then there's something seriously wrong. So no, I didn't replace it with a worse fan. The heat was getting worse BEFORE i did that. It just carried on getting worse to the point that the replacement wasn't enough either, so obviously the PSU was breaking some other way.

Reviews mention the TX850 isn't very quiet.

And yes, I do plan to upgrade - I wanted it to last "for a while yet", and this 8800gt is starting to get slow

The modular ones you mentioned are pretty expensive. I'd like to keep it under 120 euro's if possible

Of course I'm asking a lot here - silent and powerful for under 120 - but it might be possible

TX850 is the second quietest PSU in the 850w price range. Only Enemax Revolution85+ 850w beats it.

Link me to review were it says its loud. under 700w load that is. Almost all PSUs are noisy at 100% load, TX850W included.

Indeed they only mentioned it was noisier than some other PSU under load. I don't really mind what it's like when I'm playing a game, I just want it to be as quiet as it can get while I'm watching a movie or something.

In fact its almost impossible to load the PSU over 700w.

Even
QX9770 3.6GHz
NF790
2xGTX 295
GTX280 physx

setup takes only about 700w.

So no worries, I doubt neither you or me will ever come even near that.

In idle, evenn very high end PC takes like 150-200w tops. So the PSU fan should run on minimum RPM. (If I remember right fanspeed starts to clime up after around 45-50%

Ok, so what IS the sound level like when idle? I'm building a PC for someone with a PC Power & Cooling "silencer" PSU now (in fact I put it in my own PC for the time being) and it is inaudible. With the same CPU cooler as you, undervolted duorb on the 8800gt, and casefans running on silent mode I can barely hear my PC at all. Wouldn't want to put an audible PSU in there

How urgent is getting this PSU? I mean I get my RMA replacement tx850w on Monday/Tuesday so I could try it.

Reviews have said the PC&P silencer is somnewhat noisy. So I guess the Corsair will be inaudible to you as well.

My unit had faulty fan controller (fan ran constant 100% 2800rpm) and it wasn't that bad. clicking noise just gave it up that something was wrong.

It should be inaudible. If you hear clicking noise or think its noisy in anyway, I recommend RMA. There are some bad fan controllers out in the CWT Corsairs.

The TX850W has another advantage over its 750w little brother. better voltage regulation and slightly better efficiency.

Yeah, the difference in performance between the 850 and the 750 was much bigger than the difference in price, so I bought the 850

Thanks for the help, brosmiths.
