Best webook/notebook.

So I'm moving out and into a flat with my mate, and I'm wondering what the best webook/notebook would be for me.

We're not getting internet, 'cause my flatmate has a dongle for her laptop, and I have unlimited internet on my phone, so I'm just gonna hook that up to a laptop for internet.
I'll only need it for surfing, and word processing, 'cause I've got my xbox for gaming.
I'll have a budget of ~£300 once I get a job, so can you recommend a good laptop for my needs?

My neighbor at Uni has one of those EE-PC's, or whatever they're called. He has the top-spec black coloured one and it's a nice looking machine, and performs pretty well for the (limited) things that it does. I'm not sure that I would wholeheartedly recommend one; they're a little too dinky and just seem like a bit of a gimmick. Sure, £300 isn't a lot of money for a laptop but they literally don't do a lot. A lot of the time he seems incredibly bored, and pines to use my desktop PC .

I've had several laptops and my top recommendation is, surprisingly, a MacBook. I'm converted on that front!

I have an EEE PC 900 and I love it. I wouldn't mind having one of the newer Atom netbooks, though.

I do light Java programming on mine and it also plays CS 1.6 with 50fps (unoptimized). I also run Open Office on it and it gets the job done very nicely. I can't say enough positive things about it, I love it.

Plus, being able to carry it in one hand comfortably and type at the same time makes for a nice bit of mobility and ease of use. The battery life is great and ... yea ... if you don't want to do any gaming or video editing, it can do everything a larger and bulkier laptop can do for a fraction of the price.

Would you say an Apple laptop is worth the extra price? They are supposed to be good for audio playback since they have a quality spdif out.

They're the best for anything musical or creative, period. The platform is way faster, more stable and generally higher quality. The quality of the SPDIF out shouldn't really make a difference to you because any audio enthusiast should have a USB/Firewire sound-card .

Well I would like to go spdif out>EMU via optical and then to speakers. Latency on my netbook is not sufficient for low latency ASIO playback, especially when multiple USB devices are plugged in.

Because you want the best of the best for your audio sublimity, therefore I must insist that anything running off SPDIF is going to be shit . Mac's are better audio-platforms fullstop, but you should still run them through a FireWire or high-end USB card anyway, fullstop!

I feel that you guys are venturing off topic. Seeing as audio requirements were not part of the OP.

I personally wouldn't go for an (Eee PC) or anything similar, because I find them too small. I don't think you're going to be able to get much of a good laptop for £300, though.

MacBook audio hardware good? HA!

iMac and MacBook audio hardware is absolutely dire. It's substantially better in the Mac Pro and MacBook Pro.

@OP

They're all pretty similar. Makes little difference. The size is the biggest problem with all of them. Anything smaller than 12" is too dinky to be really practical.

It is adequate but I don't enjoy browsing much on a tiny screen. At least not for longer periods. Most netbooks have 12"< screens, not sure about the newer ones

Well my dad just got a samsung NC10 for £300 or so, its really nice to look at, has a great battery life and handles general usage easily (not tried games on it or anything althought it will play DVD's easily enough, although it does lack a disc drive itself).
