I would recommend the Nikon D40 or D60 if it is your first DSLR.

I'm looking for one too.  I'm probably going to go with an older version of the Nikon D40.  I was looking at the D40, EOS XT and Rebel XS, but I think I've got my mind made up on the D40.

i can't speak for Nikon's, i am sure they are quality. For that price i bought a Canon 450d (XSi) 12 mp camera with Live View.
For $200 less than your link, my wife bought a Canon 1000d (XS) with an image stabilized kit lense. [@ amazon.com]
i am happy, having owned an original digital Rebel first. if you decide on Nikon, look around first. i've found bestbuy has the biggest prices and smallest selection. post pics when you get whichever . . .

How much difference is there in image quality with the image stabilizer?  Does the XSi have image stabilization built in?

Personally, I prefer the more durable 10D-50D line.  My 10D has been with me for ages and it's built like a tank.  Battle scarred, dropped somewhat, soaked by Shamu and Waterworld, and keeps on ticking.  The XS and XSi are just too light and flimsy for my taste.

I got a D60 for my first DSLR a few months ago, really easy to get to grips with, quality feel and it produces awesome pictures!

Honestly when you buy a DSLR, you not only buy the camera, but into the camera system itself. A particular system of lenses, flashes, etc and also technical support from the brand.

For those reasons, I would suggest either getting a Canon or Nikon DSLR. They have been making cameras since the days of film, and both offer a very good selection of lenses when compared to the more minor players in the DSLR field.

I will personally tell you to get a Canon, since thats what I shoot.

You best bet would be to go into a camera store, and try out the cameras.. just to see what feels better. Do some research first, so you are informed, and play dumb. It's amazing some of the bullshit that camera salespeople will say.

Canon doesn't use body based IS.. it's nowhere near as effective as an IS unit built into the lens, especially at longer focal lengths.
