Right now I'm sitting at 3.7 GHz, stable in both Prime and IBT.  Temps are not even near being an issue.  435 x 8.5 = 3697.5 MHz.

I'm looking to OC to at least 3.8 GHz or even 4.0 GHz if I can get that high, but just raising the FSB to 440 (3740 MHz) makes the system a few minutes into both Prime and IBT.

Here are the settings I attempted to use.  Hardware monitor screenshots provided because of Vdrop:

you're gonna need a lot more Vcore and PLL voltage. You should be using >1.4Vcore in CPU-z and 1.9V PLL. Also play around with the CPU GTL ref. voltage. Also up the dram voltage to 2.1

isn't 1.36-ish the max safe amount for 45nm quads?  i didn't want to get too close to that.  i'll up the PLL and play with the CPU GTL ref. V.  i didn't know the GTL ref V made a difference.  in the BIOS you'll actually see that i had reverse vdrop for the RAM - it runs about .088V higher than what i set it at.  or did you mean i should go even higher with the actual value?

also, is 4 GHz feasible for my hardware?

According to intel the chips can take up to 1.5-1.6V with sufficient cooling. For 24/7 usage the general consensus seems to be to stay below 1.45V to be on the safe side. Beyond that point any additional headroom gained by more voltages is quickly negated by higher temps anyhow.

GTL ref can make a huge difference in OCability.

If your ram overvolts you can leave it at your current setting although JEDEC specs dictate that DDR2 has to work with up to 2.3V. It can't hurt to up the voltage a little and go for a higher clock or lower timings

I have a similar problem, only with keeping my Q9650 stable at 4.05. I think it's my motherboard, and have been up with 1.38 (BIOS) with my chip.

Last time I checked u didn't have a quad.

edit: oh and u might not be there for long. Do I have to remind you that max 24/7 voltage for 45nm is 1.55V according Intel testing and specs. After that silicon starts to degrade exponentially.

Well, it's 1.6 in BIOS, but with vdrop, it's 1.5

oh, so it's around 1.55V?  must have gotten it mixed up in my head as i thought it was 1.35V.  plenty of room then.

i have plenty of time after school today so we'll see how it goes.

I've seen the same thing, I think it was just a rumor. I know on 45nm duals, the safe max is about 1.45.

1.38 is a little high for my chip. My Q9650 has a really shitty VID (1.275) and I can boot into windows at 4.05 at about 1.3.

Okay, I'm at 3.8 GHz (stable, I *think*) with 1.344 VCore. Should I attempt to make that mad dash to 4 GHz, or should I be happy with 3.8 GHz and start lowering my VCore?

Your mobo should do 4.0. It all depends on what you're comfortable with. Looks like you've got enough headroom.

Btw, what are your temps and VID?

yeah, it should.  i'm going to take a stab at it this weekend.

temps are about 30 average idle, 53-ish load.  a lapped TRUE and CPU to 10 micron certainly work wonders.

There is still 15c room. Go for 4.2GHz.

yeah, maybe with a VCore over 1.45...i want to go 1.4V maximum.

i'm done.  i don't know what to do anymore.  i can't even get stable at 3.8 GHz.  my mobo seems to have a FSB hole/wall at 460+.  even the jew-crazy volts that max suggested to get to 3.8 GHz didn't work.  looks like it's 3.7 for me.
