Rules:

1. I don't build it. My computer building days are over for the most part
2. Media-Oriented, I would love to get my photoshop abilities back, but also for musicks and movies
3. Under $800 if possible
4. No Macs (Never again tbh)
5. Can it withstand abuse?

Basically, I need a computer other than my POS office desktop for school, work, projects, etc.

Even if its Dell... I don't even care anymore.

You'd probably get the best deal and warranty from Dell. I'm sure you knew that already though. I'd just go through the build your own system thing so you get everything you want and not the stuff you don't.

Unless you want used, in which case we could all hop on craigslist and see who can find the best deal.

I got my Asus G1s off craigslist for $600. it was 3 months old at the time and the guy gave me the receipt and info so I was able to transfer the 3yr extended warranty from bestbuy.  It was stll freshly released at the time and retailed for $1200.

Here it is:

Within your price range now, too.   It's handled everything I've thrown at it with ease, Sony Vegas 6.0, Photo Shop, BF2 on high settings, CoD5 on high as well. It's

edit: that link is for a refurb'd G1,  still though, that's a really good deal for a powerful computer.   My Dad has purchased at least 5 refurb'd computers over the years and has never had an issue.

Also, I just bought one of these for my wife yesterday:

Not as as my G1s, but for the money ($475 shipped) it packs a pretty good punch.

Telling us what size of screen you want would be nice. If you got a good LCD already, you could get away with a ~15" laptop for limited school desk space, but plug it into a bigger screen (for 1080p media) once you get home. So for now, I'm going to disregard the lack of info.

If you don't want a used laptop, play around with newegg's search features to narrow down some selections between $750 and $1000. Dell's a fine choice and so is the HP Pavillion line. If you're feeling bold, you could experiment with an Acer. My suggestion would be to just get a really, really cheap laptop for school work (if it isn't too process-intensive), then use a desktop for gaming and media. Not onlly will you be less heartbroken if something happens to it in travel (bad power, imperfect inverter, etc), but you won't have to grow such large eyes on the back of your head to watch out for theft.

With a big buddy laptop, you'd be plugging the sucker in to watch Blu-Ray or to play Company of Heroes anyway.

Here's two things to look for that are sometimes disregarded by manufacturers (like Sony...and on media laptops, for shame):

RJ-45: Some models are going entirely wireless nowadays. Fair enough, but it doesn't really help when at a location with a faulty wireless signal but a completely workable wired internet source.
eSATA: No matter how big of a hard drive you have, you're going to fill it on a media computer...and USB 2.0 is way too slow for additional storage. So there's no excuse for any new model of laptop heftier than a slip of a netbook to be without the joy of eSATA.
