So, a mate of mine wants a good gaming laptop. He doesn't want to sepnd money at Alienware or Hypersonic or those kinds of things.

He wants a 17 inch screen, a SLI combo to run Crysis on high (his demand), and under 2100 CAD (about 1800 US)

Starting with the Intel X9300, what should I go with? My plan is to get a crappy one with a decent mobo, then strip the parts and upgrade them with mine.

I realise that this somehow became a duplicate thread. Could the mods please electrocute it?

You can't really build a laptop just like that.
The idea of any hi-fi system is to reproduce the source material as faithfully as possible, and to deliberately add distortion to everything you hear (due to amplifier deficiencies) because it sounds 'nice' is simply not high fidelity. If that is what you want to hear then there is no problem with that, but by adding so much additional material (by way of harmonics and intermodulation) you have a tailored sound system, not a hi-fi. - Rod Elliot, ESP

Any reason he doesn't want to build a desktop for the same price with faster parts?

You can get a build a laptop kit, but the specs are limited and the 1.8kUSD budget is restrictive for how time consuming gathering the parts would be. OP: you might as well have an actual company build it. I recommend http://www.digitalstormonline.com/

Laptops//Model A17 looks about right.

Yeah...I tried to persuade him to get a desktop, to no avail. He's stuck on that idea. he wants top of the line, but doesn't want to pay for it. ><

Building your own laptop is way different to building your own desktop.

I don't think it's in the same "That's cool and it will be better and cheaper if I build it myself" category.

But, I'm not too knowledgeable on laptop components, so you can prove me wrong.

My advice would be to tell your friend either a custom desktop or a store-built laptop.

Tell him if he wants to run Crysis for $1800 he can (almost) only do it with a desktop.

Hmm...never mind, he found one by Sager. It's good enough.

Thanks for all.
