previously ...

We eventually after testing i got the system stable and was able to isolate the bad chip. Ran it off 3 1GB chips gave the the 2 2GB chips to a friend. Fine.

Now I noticed a consistent lockup last night when playing any 3d accelerated game. Did the whole memtest song and dance and what do you know, another chip gone . I'm done with this board and any nforce chipset.

I'm looking for some selection expertise for a new motherboard and 4 GB of memory. I don't overclock so leave that out of any though process. Budget wise I'm fairly flexible, but want to keep it reasonable (i.e. really not go over $200 for a board) Also I pretty much exclusively use Newegg.

Motherboard must ...

For memory I prefer 2GB chips but am not opposed to 1GB.

Thanks in advance, karmas of course for good contributions, aids for anything else

You can get any of them in 800 Mhz/1066Mhz, just search a wee bit on newegg, people will generally advise you to go with Corsair or OCZ. I have the 1066Mhz OCZ and they work great!

Have the same mobo aswell, and it's great, even not for overclocking, I have had no issues. My previous Nforce mobo sucked donkey balls!

NForce chipsets have a long history of killing RAM.

Really?

I've never encountered that. They are pretty bloody fussy about what RAM you use and sometimes fall over when using all the slots at stock voltages, but other than that I've never seen any (RAM) issues.

I have had ram problems on more than 5 Nforce boards.

1 board didn't work at all with 4 sticks, random bootfails with 2. tried higher NB, ram etc. voltages.

1 board was randomly BSODing at any settings, even running +0.03V over stock volt for ram.

1 board was barely stable at lower than stock speed, 667MHz with higher than stock voltage.

1 board wasn't able to OC over 30mhz before BSOD funfun, FSB hole was huge and pretty much made it impossible to OC CPU at all.

1 board locked up completely once in a while when using 4 sticks. even reseting CMOS didn't help before X number of tries.

1 board melted, corrupted 500GB files, randomly corrupted downloads.

Are you planning to go CF?

Asus P5Q
2x2GB G.SKILL 1066MHz kit that was in bargain in newegg.

or if u want CF, Asus P5Q pro

Sounds about right. I've had a few that wouldn't run 4 sticks, some that wouldn't OC reliably at all and some that wouldn't boot at all of most brands of memory (but other brands worked fine). They do have lots of memory issues (particularly on Asus offerings), but I've never seen them kill any RAM. All RAM modules I've ever pulled out of them after dodgy performance have worked fine in other machines.

I take killing to mean damaging the component. I've never seen them do that or heard of them doing that however fussy and awkward they may be with RAM in general.

No I'll end up just running one card (heat, quiet, etc). I might end up getting a new card when i get this board, not sure yet. When I run any game, after 60 seconds or so, ill get a freeze up and some patterned graphical corruption. When I reset, corruption can be seen from the post display. I had just assumed (85%)  it was a heat issue pushing the dying card over the edge or (15%) that the board is causing some underlying issue.

@Bertster7: I've has an asus branded nforce since nforce2 and in retrospect i see that is a true statement. I've always had silly random memory related issues.

You should try atitool artifact scan and furmark with temp monitoring to see if your G80 is going over 100c like one of my faulty ones did.

Just noticed which board you got now. Thats the exact same one I described with

wtf is that from heat?

edit: btw i did a stress test using the one ntune had and locked up so i could not check he temps. I can tell you that the resting temps are 66c (and its a bit warm in here, motherboard and cpu are both below 40c)

Heat + short circuiting stuff around the core

That was my 3rd A8N-SLi deluxe... after that I didn't bother RMA again :(

edit: Did you test the gfx card load temps?

And delete Ntune ASAP. It is THE cause of troubles.

I did not see what they were. I did end removing ntune. After restarted is bluescreened me, and it was very apparent it was the reason why.

Also, I'm going to go and test the card later this weekend  at someones house with comparable system. But I want to go ahead and pick another one ... i was considering this: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a … 6814143145

But wanted to get the collective opinion.

Thats a bit overpriced for GTX 280 (hot and more higher power consumption vs the 55nm chips).

Look for deals on GTX 275 and GTX 260 Core 216 55nm

performance wise much different

(i guess anything now will seem faster than the 8800gtx )
