so today my cousin said he had to buy a new lcd monitor and he's throwing away his old one
I said I'd take it so he gave it to me
I took it and hooked it up
The screen blinks and the power button blinks green
so I googled and its a common problem with some transistors on the inverter for the backlight (or something like that?)
I was wondering if anyone had a problem like this (with any lcd monitor) and how you managed to fix it
I don't want to waste it because the screen is in great condition

We use those in my engineering class. I also use the E178FP on my secondary computer. If that monitor is out of dell warranty, you're skrewed unless you can find someone to repair it.

It's either bad transistors or capacitors. Or both. It's no biggie if you know how to use a soldering iron.

The idea of any hi-fi system is to reproduce the source material as faithfully as possible, and to deliberately add distortion to everything you hear (due to amplifier deficiencies) because it sounds 'nice' is simply not high fidelity. If that is what you want to hear then there is no problem with that, but by adding so much additional material (by way of harmonics and intermodulation) you have a tailored sound system, not a hi-fi. - Rod Elliot, ESP

that's the thing
I have no fuckin clue how to use one, what to replace, how to figure it out, and where to get replacements
I read some stuff online how people fixed them but no one really goes into dept about it
I'm afraid I'll fuck it up when i try to do it

Well if it doesn't work to begin with, you don't have anything to lose. Soldering isn't hard at all, and you can pick up a soldering kit for under $20.

Nah, it wouldn't work. The multi-layer boards used in computers and peripherals are hard as hell to solder, especially with a cheap iron. The boards are basically heatspreaders. Everything gets hot except for the solder.

Well think of it this way - you didn't pay anything for it to begin with. Either you fix it and it works great or you try to fix it and fail. If you fix it then you're up one monitor and if you can't fix it then no big deal, it wasn't working to begin with. But look at what you stand to gain and what the net cost is, really, if you fail, and you can see it's at least worth the try.

so I took it apart
and I got the board out
I don't have any of the stuff to test it, or a soldering iron or a desoldering iron
so I think I'm just gonna buy a replacement board? It'll probably be cheaper than if I have to buy all that stuff

I doubt you're gonna have much luck finding a worthwhile replacement board.

Yeah, at this point you've gotta ask yourself how much your time is worth and whether the time and effort you're putting into this is a better deal than just buying a replacement.
