I am taking a weekend vacation to Canada with my friend and his family. we plan on taking a hookah (along with the tobacco) into the country. i just want to know, will this cause any problems at the border?

Hardly ever truthfully. Just don't declare it and if they happen to search you say you forgot. You may get a fine, but it's not going to get you locked up.

When I went down to Georgia this past summer, they searched me when entering the US, and when re-entering Canada.
Mind you we were two young adults traveling, and my friend looks suspicious so that didn't help.
But since you are traveling as a 'family' you should be less prone to being searched. But it's still up to them on who they search or not.
