Looking to run a core i7 rig with 2x 4890s in CF and an old 3870 for my second monitor and 6 harddrives. Of course i am overclocking everything.

I have an 850 watt right now but i dont think that will do.

1000w isnt too pricey. and futureproof

I would say 850W would be enough but wait for freezer max or panzer. 1000w would be great as well they don't cost a ton ither

Which model is your 850W. Might be pushing it there.

I am pretty sure 850W is fine, depending on how many hard drives you are running.

I don't come here a lot anymore.

500-650 real Watts. 750-1000 computer Watts.
The idea of any hi-fi system is to reproduce the source material as faithfully as possible, and to deliberately add distortion to everything you hear (due to amplifier deficiencies) because it sounds 'nice' is simply not high fidelity. If that is what you want to hear then there is no problem with that, but by adding so much additional material (by way of harmonics and intermodulation) you have a tailored sound system, not a hi-fi. - Rod Elliot, ESP

Antec TPQ 850, 4x 12 volt rails so it it should be fine, right?

Don't forget that a bigger PSU in terms of wattage doesn't necessarily mean that it will support all of your gear. I'd use a PSU calculator to verify that you have enough wattage for all of your components. Something like this might be good:

With all those hard drives maybe bump it up.

Why would you need an old 3870 for a monitor? Cant you just use one of the four monitor ports you would have on your crossfired 4890s?

On topic: I would say 1000 just to be on the safe side

What 850 do you have? If it's a good make it'll be absolutely fine. You might use around 650W max.

Also, as said above, you don't need an extra card for a second monitor.

nah.  HDs maybe use 25W max.  a quality 850W PSU will do the job well.  i'm thinking the CMPSU-850TX.  dunno too much about your current PSU tbh.

that runs on 620w Corsair. 850w is enough for quadfire.

QX9770 3.6GHz
NF790
2xGTX 295
GTX 280 Physx

needs about 600w real, takes 700w from power outlet.

It will work just fine with that Antec.

yeah will work just fine. As long as u don't go nuts and buy quadfire (4x18A rails is not enough for it. one rail would be overloaded.)

edit: but why would you use HD 3870 for second monitor? you have 4 DVI total available on the HD 4890s alone.

Can you crossfire and have a second monitor now with the cards still in crossfire? I haven't kept up with anything recently so i wouldn't know.

Alright, then is 850 watts enough for 3x 4890s in crossfire?

You have too much money.

Should be. What's the worst that can happen? Too little power can't be too much of a problem.

I can't make any promises, but it should work.

edit: 18A/rail is a bit weak and you need to use molex adapters if you are going tri-fire tho.

If you run into troubles with tri-fire, look for good deals on either Corsair HX1000W or Enermax Revolution85+. They come with enough PCI-E power cables for tri-fire.

As always when looking to buy a PSU you should calculate what you need and then go the one size bigger ... so if your other hardware needs 850W you buy 1000W ...

Why you ask? ... because a PSU with more Ws works with less strain than a PSU working at max at all times and it will last longer and as mentioned is more futureproof ... besides the price difference between a 850W and a 1000W PSU isn't that much ...

And go for a modular PSU, less cables is always good ...

Go 1300 W which the max from a standard 120 V 15 A 60 Hz outlet. Truly future proof unless they start using 208 V or 3 phase.

Using a 700w overkill PSU will not be good for efficiency and is pointless in every way.
