I get the impression that idling isn't very effective at getting unlocks

Well if you are good at aiming it shouldn't be so hard to pick up few of the classes. Play medic and people will love you, and uber heavy, pyro or demoman. those are often the best one against sentries.

You will see spies who can take an identity of your teammate, but they often have half HP and can't attack or switch weapon while in disguise. If you se one retreat go after them and kill them.

It doesn't hurt to spend some time as scout just running around empty stages just to get a feel for them. And if it feels like you're not being productive then you can think of it as grinding for unlocks

You must be kidding.

When they disguise as your teammate, once they attack they lose cover and every sentry nearby will fill the spy with bullets. That is you wont see the character switch weapon or being able to use the weapon your disguise have. Also if you are pyro, just flame away anyone coming near you. If they catch fire, just hunt them down.

So basicly any character that run around with one weapon and half the hp and doesn't fire back when you shoot at is quite often a spy. Ofcourse you can change weapon yourself as in spy form and the only weapon you can use while in disguise is sappers without losing your cover. Any other weapon is getting your cover blowns
