I have a ASUS A8AE-LE (Generic board) that has been on my computer when I purchased it and I was thinking that I needed a new processor (I have a AMD 64 3800+) Since it sucks balls and is outdated I was thinking will it be possible to upgrade my processor to say a AMD 64 X2 5000+ or a Phenom X3/X4 without replacing the mobo? I am very broke to purchase both a mobo and a new processor.
The motherboard supports S939 CPUs upto
Supports the following processors:
* AMD Athlon 64 X2 4800+
* Athlon 64 4000+
* AMD Sempron 3200+
Chances of finding a new S939 X2 are pretty slim. There are some used going around once in a while, but demand for them is higher than supply.
Phenoms are totally out of the question. Same goes for all modern AM2/+/3 socket based CPUs.
edit: It is this board http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/docu … amp;dlc=en right?
e2: And when you make a transition to newer socket, it will mean new cpu, mobo, ram and maybe new PSU.

checkout craigslist under computers in your area...if you are in the US?
and ebay... other than that... save for a current moboard... 75-100 bucks
and an amd phenom or intel duo/quadcore... i bought a q9400 for 180 recently... very powerful...

Love is the answer
I had to look for 939 based board about a year ago to replace my wife's, and it was "slim pickins"
Since I don't know what you have for other components, I'm gonna tell you this: Stay away. Stay far away.
The best you can really do with socket 939 is 2GB DDR-400 and a 3500+ or better. Neither are worth scouring for.

I think the best CPU you can get for that board is the FX60 (the rest Panzer has already mentioned). Not that you'll be able to find one, and if you do the price is likely to be extortionate.
Screw it then I'm buying a new mobo, processor, and RAM.
