Okay, so today I installed the W7 32-bit RC, to replace the beta. I also installed BF2.

Now, I try joining a multiplayer game, I get the notorious "Kicked for insufficient O/S privileges" message. I had it on the beta, too. I know the fix for it, and I was going to apply it...

and then I looked everywhere; PnkbstrA and B are nowhere on my system. In fact, there is no indication whatsoever that my comp even has anything vaguely related to PB on it.

So I go to the evenbalance website, download their updater, incorporate BF2, update, try again. I've now got a pb folder full of dlls and picture files. Great. Still no .exes.

So, I ask you, tech gods of BF2s, where the hell are my exes? And how can I find them?

p.s. it's not listed under services either, and nothing in the processes list.

Specs: AMD Athlon X2 5200+ OC, BFG 9800GT OC, M2N32 SLI deluxe mobo. Don't know if it helps.

Reinstall BF2 or CoD4, they install PB with them. Or you could go install it from their site; www.evenbalance.com.

Let me clarify, since you did the updater. Reinstall Punkbuster - not update it.

Tried all those things--not working.

I've found this thing called pbsvc--sounds like a diagnostic thing. I'm gonna try that now.

I haven't played with Windows 7 yet, but does it still have a compatibility mode?  If it does, you could try right-clicking on the BF2 install executable and trying the install in XP compatibility mode.

It does have compatibility modes, yes.
Try this, doubt it'll work though.

Don't forget run as admin, not on the shortcut but on the actual executable.

Pbsvc worked, somehow. It seemed to automatically track the problems with PB and fix them

PBSVC is used to install/uninstall/reinstall PB so it usually does work in these cases, as well as most other PB related problems.
