I'm putting together a computer for the music department at my school and I need suggestions for parts. The main purpose of the computer will be for audio recording and editing.

Specs so far:

Intel E7400

500GB WD Hard Drive

Antec Earthwatts 500W PSU

Liteon CD/DVD drive

Asus Xonar DX sound card

I need suggestions for a motherboard, preferably <$100 and a video card unless you think on-board would work (video quality doesn't have to be fantastic, it'll be viewed on a CRT monitor).

Budget is $1000 but it has to be made in two $500 orders (don't ask...my school board's policy is stupid).

for recording you need a sound card with the lowest possible latency. My EMU is perfect as it has native hardware ASIO support. If you can't afford the 0404 go with 0202.

Video card is not important, unless they are going to want to do some video editing etc on it later.
So if they are wanting to do some video editing, just pick up some cheap card (maybe a HD4550 or something)
Also, not sure exactly how much recording will be done, 500GB should be fine unless you are doing ALOT, in that case go bigger.

What software are you looking at? That's the biggest bit you should worry about.

unfortunately.

I really want logic, and I would love the OS as a secondary, but I have to buy their shitty overpriced hunk of crap to get it.

once upon a midnight dreary, while i pron surfed, weak and weary, over many a strange and spurious site of ' hot  xxx galore'. While i clicked my fav'rite bookmark, suddenly there came a warning, and my heart was filled with mourning, mourning for my dear amour, " 'Tis not possible!", i muttered, " give me back my free hardcore!"..... quoth the server, 404.

Hey they finally got that working on my mobo. For the most part though, the list is pretty limited of hardware that it supports.

Okay...can you use another computer already there? If so, just buy the HD, and get Protools. That'll set you at least 500 bucks back, but it's the best.

Can't use any PC existing at the school cause the majority of them are all Windows 98 machines I swear my school board's on fucking welfare.

We've already got the programs for recording so that's a huge saving right there.

Yeah, I had the same problem with the OCDSB before...lol.

What's the software? I suggested ProTools 'cos it has its own sound card...I'd get a separate one

Honestly, this is it. I prefer Logic over PC equivalents, and so do many professionals.

My school didn't even have a proper chemistry lab.
