The Dallas
County District Attorney says a man who has spent nearly 23 years in prison on a sexual assault conviction is set to be exonerated by DNA testing.

District Attorney Craig Watkins said Tuesday that post-conviction tests have proved Jerry Lee Evans is innocent. The 47-year-old Evans was sentenced to life in prison in 1987 after being convicted of aggravated sexual assault with a deadly weapon.

Evans was picked by the victim out of a photo lineup one year after the assault near downtown Dallas. A hearing was scheduled Wednesday to enter the DNA test results in court.

The New York-based Innocence Project says Dallas County has led the nation in DNA exonerations since 2000. Evans would be the county's 21st.

What do you think, what your policy on people who are innocent but placed in jail? Should the gov. give them like 100k for every year they spent in jail? or something along those lines how should the gov. award wrongly accused?

Yeah. I don't think all the money in the world would be worth spending 23 years in jail.

I wonder how many of those 21 got beaten by the police upon arrest? I mean they were 'obvious criminals' so the police should have given them a beat down right? Couple of kicks to the head here, a little dog bite over there and high fives all around. /sarcasm

Would you spend 23 years in jail from the age of 24, the prime of your life?

Nah... I wouldn't.

It's sad that he's spent so long in jail wrongly, but even sadder that the jail sentence will have been the biggest influence on his life and personality, so he's probably more of a danger to the public now, that he's been proven innocent than he was when he was sentenced.

There's no cash sum that can make up for something like that happening to someone

GravyDan you're too funny. That is awful just because he got fingered by the woman who got raped, he got sentenced. That long in prison would institutionalise you, he wouldn't know what to do with his freedom. They could at least provide him beers and hookers when he comes out.

Paying him money for being him being wrongly imprisoned is the price of making such a mistake. Hopefully the powers that be should strive to stop this thing happening in the first place. I don't think I'd be able to let it go. I would be sitting in jail everyday just fuming.

He was picked from a line-up by the victim. How is this the state's fault? This must of been a case of He-said / She-said with no conclusive proof until now. I say he should sue the victim or garnish her(/his) wages for the inaccurate accusation....this is a stretch but maybe his lawyer too for doing a lousy job of defending him.

Sounds about right really.

Plus, the girl who fingered him should be in some sort of real hurt too.

I mean, sure it was bad what happened to her, but you'd better be damn sure you are right before you destroy someone's entire life.   Granted, it is possible someone may look EXACTLY alike, but it is amazing that that is all it took to bring the wrong guy down, apparently.

Usually in situations like this though, the wrong guy isn't a saint,  and goes down because it isn't a stretch to believe he is guilty, considering his criminal past.

Not saying that this is the case HERE by any means,  and no one, even a criminal should do time for something they id not do, but i doubt anyone feels bad if a repeated child molester would one day go to jail for something he did not do.

Shit. Does anyone know the name of that short story about the rich russian guy who makes a bet with a young russian guy that if the young russian guy can stay locked up without seeing anyone else for 20 years he can get a few million dollars? Can't remember the damned name.
