My housemate has the HD555's and I have the HD215's. TBH, we can't tell the difference between the two audibly. The only difference is the way they cover your ears. If I had the choice between the two, I'd probably save my money and get the 215's.
The 555s are adjustable. I prefer headphones that properly cover and wrap around the ears. It's just more comfortable

You're pretty much wrong, and an entire crowd of people that actually use the things to listen or play music (i.e. playing instruments or listening to vinyl) will attest to this fact. Tube amps have a better tone and richness all-round- call it what you will, vintage nostalgia or just good aural taste - solidstate sounds fake, manufactured and hollow in comparison. Easier and cheaper, sure... but if that makes something better, why aren't we all driving around in KIA's and Japanese import cars?Freezer7Pro wrote:
From a purely technological standpoint, SS is superior! They can produce more accurate sound for less money! The only reason tubes still exist, is that people enjoy the distortion they add!.Sup wrote:
Its easier? Whats that got to do with sound? 70% of music lovers prefer tube amps. Some headphones/speakers sound better with SS amp, some sound better with tube amps. You cannot say one is better than the other.Bertster7 wrote:
Freezer is totally right. You're never going to get the same fidelity from a valve that you'll get from solid state transistors. It's just easier to get better fidelity from transistors. Which is one reason we don't use valves for computers anymore.
That said, they're a damn sight more durable.

What do you mean by adjustable? You can adjust the reach of the phones on the 215's. The 215's cover your entire ear, they're just round rather than oval shaped.
The adjustable bit was in reply to bell.
The 215s sit on your ear afaik. The 555s cover and surround them entirely

"Better tone and richness" - subjective terms. You can say whatever you want, SS amplifiers are more accurate than tubes. It's a cold, hard fact. A transistor can switch without issues at hundreds of gigahertz, tubes struggle with 15kHz. If you prefer tubes, that's fine, they do have a nice sound, but they still aren't as accurate as transistors.Uzique wrote:

The idea of any hi-fi system is to reproduce the source material as faithfully as possible, and to deliberately add distortion to everything you hear (due to amplifier deficiencies) because it sounds 'nice' is simply not high fidelity. If that is what you want to hear then there is no problem with that, but by adding so much additional material (by way of harmonics and intermodulation) you have a tailored sound system, not a hi-fi. - Rod Elliot, ESP
The 215's cover and surround your ears entirely as well. Well, unless you had a fucking gigantic ear. They're just a different shape to the 555's.max wrote:
