T900:
Good quality video and photos
Cheaper than the LX3
Poor battery life

Lumix LX3:
Excellent photo quality, okay video quality
More expensive than T900
Better battery life

It'd be a graduation gift. I'm not a professional photographer or even a super-serious amateur, so while picture quality is important, is it really worth a $200 difference?

Does your budget allow for the better one? If you can afford it, I'd suggest you buy it--you'll probably want the extra battery life and such in the long run.

The LX3 has fuck all in terms of zoom. At its max zoom level you wont even be able to catch life size normal shots. It will take very good macros, however. If you just want something for parties and stuff like that I would go with the Sony because its more portable and has a better zoom

Might also want to look at the DMC-TZ3 or one of its newer equivalents. I have it and its a pretty darn good camera (and a massive zoom/pretty good battery life) even though it has little in regard to manual control

I got the T900 when it was a few weeks out (overseas).

Absolutely brilliant picture quality.  Seriously.  I swear Sony do a lot of programming to get the saturation/contrast right.  I also have an old Lumix as well (surprise, surprise), and I'm not nearly as happy with the way the pictures are organised/quality.  Then again, the lumix is old, so it's not really a good comparison.
