In 1994, a jury awarded a New Mexico woman $2.9 million after she was burned by spilled McDonald's coffee. Now a Bay County woman claims she's steamed at Starbucks for the same reason.Irene Bruno alleges she endured severe burns and permanent scars three years ago when a worker at a Midland County Starbucks Coffee outlet improperly secured a lid on a large cup of coffee, causing the hot liquid to spill onto Bruno's lap, inner thighs and legs.

Bruno, in a lawsuit filed in May in U.S. District Court, claims the lid on the coffee cup came off as she tried to sip the coffee just after buying the beverage at a Starbucks drive-thru window at 7201 Eastman, on Dec. 9, 2006.

Bruno seeks a minimum of $75,000 in damages in her lawsuit, alleging she has suffered "extreme humiliation and embarrassment" due to the scars visible on her body because of the coffee spill.

Bruno also alleges she has incurred medical expenses for treating her injuries, and claims Seattle-based Starbucks Corp. failed to properly train its workers to secure the lid on the large cup of coffee she bought from the Midland Starbucks.

The Times could not reach Bruno for comment. Her lawsuit maintains she was a resident of Bay County at the time of the coffee spill, but she has no phone number. Her attorney, Southfield lawyer Andrew M. Saperstein, could not be reached for comment.

Troy Nienberg, a Southfield attorney representing Starbucks Corp., declined comment about Bruno's lawsuit.

Bruno's lawsuit was filed April 13 in Bay County Circuit Court, but a circuit court judge ordered it transferred to U.S. District Court in Bay City on May 18.

In 1994, a jury awarded a New Mexico woman $2.9 million after she was burned by spilled coffee purchased from a McDonald's restaurant. A judge later reduced the punitive damages to $480,000 and the woman eventually settled for an undisclosed sum that was less than $600,000

What do you think about this? do you think these people should stop suing Star bucks, McDonald's and other places? Also dont they have those coffee holders that says its too hot or something along those lines for the Starbucks coffee. But yeah what do you think about this? Do you think the woman was a careless, like drinking coffee while driving or did she need to check the lid was safe and secure before driving that way she wouldnt spill the coffee in the first place? Was she reliable of understanding that since Im getting hot coffee I should check and make sure the lid is tight and secure... comment..

you have to be fucking kidding me?  scars? maybe a red spot at best from coffee.   I had 2nd and 3rd degree burns on my leg from a work accident and massive scaring and I got a grand total of $4000 after lawyers fee's.   since it was at work it went by the workmans comp injury allowances.  I still have massive scaring but still have full use of my leg so thats all I got >/     fuck this cunt!  im sure it hurt but fucking please.

She probably intentionally spilled it on herself in order to get an easy payday.  This type of lawsuit is pathetic, but as long as the American legal system allows for this type of frivolousness then you will continue to see these cases.

What really pisses me off is the cost of such litigation will be passed on the consumer.  What a bitch.

Well, even those "caution wet floor" signs aren't foolproof.  Even if someone sees the sign and slips and falls near the sign, he could still sue.

Bloody americans.
The idea of any hi-fi system is to reproduce the source material as faithfully as possible, and to deliberately add distortion to everything you hear (due to amplifier deficiencies) because it sounds 'nice' is simply not high fidelity. If that is what you want to hear then there is no problem with that, but by adding so much additional material (by way of harmonics and intermodulation) you have a tailored sound system, not a hi-fi. - Rod Elliot, ESP

If it was hot enough to cause severe burns, she couldn't have sipped it. In other words, she is lying.

Not often as I tend to spill it XD

Seriously, I think every day at least once on average. However, I drink at least a few litres of tea a day, which has exactly the same burn-sip coefficient as coffee.

No they couldn't. In that case I believe clear, visible signage is enough.

These are the fucking people that are making our world go politcal and health and safety mad.

Fucking makes me rage. It's coffee. It's hot. If you're not responsible enough to make sure the lid is on right, or you don't notice something on the floor, then you shouldn't be outside your house.

Now stop fucking sueing it's your own fault.

Fuck. You've made me mad now.

Do you idiots even read a tenth of the article posted? Blademaster even put the important part in BOLD. Lets try it again:

when a worker at a Midland County Starbucks Coffee outlet improperly secured a lid on a large cup of coffee...
When ordering through a drive through, I'm pretty sure its the employee's job to fasten lids properly.

If the employee did not fasten the lid, and the women even SLOWLY tried to sip on her hot coffee (Which any person with average intelligence does) it would have poured out due to a lid that wasn't attached to the cup.

The women is lucky she didn't get in an accident due to the employee's lack of ability to do his/her job. I hope she wins the lawsuit.

Edit: Keep in mind, if she ordered in the store, where its HER job to fasten her own lid, and she still spilled it, then its her fault. But with the way they state the incident happened, she does have a case against the employee/store.

Oh yeah, she totally deserves at least 75k for that...

I mean, if only she had eyes or common sense to notice that a lid wasn't on tight, but seeing that nobody has to take repsonsibilty for their actions these days, this was clearly unavoidable....

Oh, and lastly, there is no possible way she is lying and trying to scam her way into money, because everyone on earth tells the truth at all times.....
