I've just 'got' this film and it has a separate folder with subtitles in it.

This folder contains a rar file and sfv file.

Question: how do I make this work?!?!

Thanks.

Unrar it and open the movie, then go to audio -> subtitles track  -> load subtitles and select it.  It should work after that, might have to restart the movie or something

pretty sure you un-rar the files, then in VLC go to Media -> Advanced Open File... -> Browse to Movie -> Check "use a sibtitles file" and browse to the unpacked subtitle.

I have question in a similar topic: what software/method can I use to merge a subtitle file(.srt) and a video file(.avi) into one video file.
I have an AVI vid, and I made an srt subtitle for it, and I would like to upload it so the subtitles are also present in the video. I tried VLC player but it always give me errors and cant do j*ckshit.
