Router not broadcasting?

Hey all.

Today we replaced an old linksys router because we thought it was well, broken. After seemingly no changes, all internet connections dropped one night. I had been using the wireless just an hour before, and there was no tech/signal changes whatsoever. I couldn't even get a physical connection from the router to my PC to run.

The new router was connected with the software installed on my PC, and the physical connection seems to work just fine. The wireless however, is a completely separate issue. It didn't even seem to broadcast a signal for the first 15 minutes we had it plugged in, for no apparent reason. The indicator on the physical router showed that it was broadcasting and everything was fine. After a little bit of security switching (from WPA to no pass), it seemed to work fine. Strong signal strength, good speed. Not more than 10 minutes later does the signal disappear entirely.

And here as I'm typing this third paragraph, just right now, the signal comes back. Just connected fine. Any ideas of why it's dropping itself? I'm not confident that it will stay on for long.

What router are you using ?
What operating system are you on ?
What software did you get with your router ?

It's a linksys WRT54G2

I'm running XP prof, SP 2.

The software is "Cisco Network Magic", it doesn't seem to have helped much but I don't believe it's the cause.

ed: We were running a WRT54GS before this one, so same freq.

Connect the wire to your pc, so you can configure it @ 192.168.1.100
password is default or admin
no username
go to wireless and set it up

It doesn't have to be wired in so you can have access to the router's settings.

Reset to defaults and ensure it has the latest firmware.

I'm there, but not really sure what good I'll do. I took it off wifi protected and made it G only, thinking about switching up the channels to see if it's just an interference issue.

I'm in my router just fine (I changed the admin and pw both, they're saved in firefox), but I have no clue what I'm messing with really. I know that the G ranges have worked fine in the past and changing channels can remove interference, but past that not much.

ed: @ Alex: all defaults, reboot of modem + router, no luck.

Also, can anyone tell me what the refresh button on top does? It sounds like it's supposed to connect wireless devices, but that seems dumb. It connects just fine without messing with the button.

Double ed: Updating firmware now.

ed: changed to channel 11, signal started broadcasting immediately. Hope it stays.

Check that you have the SSID broadcasting.

It is. The channel 11 switch seemed to fix it just fine. Not sure why, though.

a lot of devices broadcast on the 2.4 GHz frequency so changing that from 1-11 can help with signal noise and such. but i frankly don't know why that solved the problem.

just for future reference, if you ever have three 2.4 GHz routers one day, put one on channel 1, one on channel 6, and one on channel 11. likewise, if you get two, put one on 1 and one on 11. this is to reduce noise/attenuation/whatever it's techncially called.
