help finding good computer for college

so i just graduated this past week, and iv been on the search for a good laptop for college. i will be majoring in mechanical engineering at WPI, and maybe getting a minor in animation or interactive media and game design. so basically, i will need a computer that can handle a good amount of stuff. im planning on using it for AutoCAD and 3d Studio max, and maybe a bit of video editing and possibly some games (although gaming will be an afterthought- i do not want to make any decisions based on gaming)
long story short: im looking at the $1000 and a bit up range, dont really want to go far over that. i need good power and a decent monitor. battery life isnt that important, because i would think i would use it mostly when it is plugged in. and finally, WPI requires that all laptops must have vista premium or business, so any advice on buying those or upgrading is also appreciated.

I've got The Asus G50. The only problem is the shitty battery life, but that was to be expected buying a gaming laptop.

Nice features, you can turn on and off the fancy blue lights'n'shit.

Overclock on the go.

and not alot of bloatware.

Actually, i also have an asus and the battery life is awesome. You just have to know when to adjust the power settings, cause if you leave it on high performance while using the battery, you kill the life. If you use leave it on entertainment mode or a mode that uses even less power then the life is prolonged. I have had my asus for a year and ive been doing that and my battery still lasts 3 and a half hours.

alright so i was looking at the site for the lenovo R500 and i think its pretty sweet. i customized one with:
-Intel Core 2 Duo processor T9400 (2.53GHz 1066MHz 6MBL2)

my only complaint is that i think it looks a bit ugly haha. but i could probably live with that. now how does this compare with the Asus?

and also, im just curious as to why everyone picked the Lenovo R500. good prices? good warrenty? good options?

The Lenovo is a good laptop, but since you're a geek who will be studying engineering at a full-blown engineering school like WPI, I would recommend you go all out and get something like the Asus G50. Sure it will be hot and heavy, but personally that's a price I'm willing to pay when it comes to buying a laptop.

If you do want something more portable, Lenovo is a good choice. Just don't buy an Acer.

alright i think iv decided to go with the Asus. i think it looks much better, and it has a few other good features (like 320 GB instead of 250 GB, webcam, cool looks) that would have cost most on the lenovo. i just have to call the college to figure out exactly about the OS, but that shouldnt be a problem. thanks for the help guys!

their customer service sucked for me, they even deleted a perfectly legit thread I made ( I had a black screen issue, lots of people were having it with Asus mobos so I made a thread there but no real solution was found by their tech support). They have good products, mobos mostly but there are a lot of issues with their soundcards.

Asus is one of my favorite brands, right up there with EVGA. As far as my experience goes, Asus is great. I've never had to use their customer service because I've never had a problem with any of their products.
