I have a friend whose Windows has crashed (or something, gets a BSOD on boot-up after the Windows splashscreen). What I am looking for is a way to get some of his data off of the HDD from his laptop. It's an old Thinkpad (at least 6 years old, if not more), so the HDD is a PATA and I don't have an external case to be able to connect it externally.

Is there a Linux OS that I can use to boot from to get into the HDD and be able to copy his files off of the HDD? It doesn't really matter what Linux it is (just please make sure it is a GUI, no command line BS, I don't have the patience for it). I just need a free one that I can load onto a CD and then run it from the CD.

I have no clue what his file system is, so assume NTFS. Any help would be most appreciated. Thanks guys.

i used an XP Live boot cd to get out of the same problem. Worked like a charm.

Pretty much any live linux CD will do. Ubuntu 9.04 32bit will probs be easiest
once upon a midnight dreary, while i pron surfed, weak and weary, over many a strange and spurious site of ' hot  xxx galore'. While i clicked my fav'rite bookmark, suddenly there came a warning, and my heart was filled with mourning, mourning for my dear amour, " 'Tis not possible!", i muttered, " give me back my free hardcore!"..... quoth the server, 404.

Less risk with NTFS http://www.nu2.nu/pebuilder/changes/. I guess it does not really matter since you will be reading.

NTFS-3G works perfectly these days.

Isn't that Jaunty Jackelope? Will that cost me anything to get the CD? I assume that it's free ... but I haven't a clue. Can't search at the moment, about to head back out into the city to work. Be swell if you could link me to a good source for the ISO.

Yup, it's Janty. Ubuntu, being open source, is free (*insert standard linux free as in freedom stuff here*)

I was in the exact same situation a week ago when my sis's lappy HDD started to fail. Could not get into Windows so I booted with a Linux live cd and copied all her data safely.

Haha, the image you got is from my university. Well played Max, well played.

Sup, did you have to do anything special? How did you access the C: drive on her computer? I'm downloading the image now ...

The HDD was still readable. With Ubuntu live CD you can see all drives and if the HDD isn't completely fucked you can still save data.

Never mind, I did it now. I pulled the files off the computer without any problems at all. Now I am installing Ubuntu on his computer. I imagine that I will be coming back to you guys in a day or so looking for help to install his mobile internet thing.

Got it all up and running. Took a bit to get the 3G modem working. Just used the Network Connection Manager to get it to work instead of going through all these dumb package managers and installing other programs. Ubuntu took care of it for me. Problem is, the Jaunty Jackalope that I have is connected to almost zero package lists. So I found this website: http://theindexer.wordpress.com/2009/04 … jackalope/ and that helped me update my list. Now I am installing Skype and will work on a few other things.

You know, I am actually kinda liking Ubuntu. Shame the computer I am using it on is a total POS ...
