I am hours away from heading to the recruiter's office.  I'll be heading there bright and early in the morning to gather as much information as I can.  I won't actually be enlisting today as I've yet to make a final decision, but over the past while I've been considering doing it.

I'm not quite happy with where I am in life.  My job, while fun, is going nowhere and barely pays the bills.  I don't feel as though I'm fully respected there either.  I never went back to college to finish up my degree and that's a bit of a blemish I look back on and regret.  I also love to travel, but that's just not happening as much due to lack of funds and time.

So.  With that said.  I'll be heading in to the recruiter's office tomorrow to see what the military can offer me.  Right now I'm leaning toward Navy, but Air Force is a close second.  I have no desire to join the army, and very little desire to join the Marines.

I know there have been a bunch of threads made about this subject.  I've read all of them.  However, this is a big, important, life-changing decision for me...and I wanted a thread that pertained to me specifically.

So...thoughts on the matter?  Preferably from people with military experience, but any opinions will be welcome.

I served in the Australian Navy for 9 years as a Combat Systems Operator, on the guided missile destroyer (DDG) HMAS Brisbane.  I had some of the best times in my life whilst I was in and would do it all over again.

I joined from a small country town straight after High School and 6 months later I was in Hawaii getting drunk and picking up chicks (It's amazing how well the Naval uniform works).  I've been half way around the world, served in Gulf War 1 and worked in Naval Intelligence during my stint ashore.

So I say go for it and good luck!

If it's a change of scenery that you need, why the hell not? As they say, you get to see the world 'n shit. Hopefully more of the world and less of the 'n shit. Plus you get paid for it.

How long do you sign up for?

I'd recommend getting a job abroad (over here bub), but as the work situation is pretty shitty globally atm, the military might not be a bad idea (as long as you come out of it alive and mentally unscarred).

Do you have any special skills that the navy or airforce could enhance while serving?

I would just say hope it goes well for you and make sure you come out of it with a useful skill.
Not sure what the proportion is who go career, many come out and start from there.
It would useful to know what you're working in now.

Use the military to finish your education and plan for a career after the military, unless your planning to be in it for life.

I gather your talking about enlisted not officer entry.
Think it all over, have a chat with some guys that are (or have been) in the navy. I'm sure it would be great, as long as you go in there with your eyes open

I really need to book a YouSession sometime soon and see if I can get into Duntroon.

This time I'll have an excuse for whoring the chopper.

This.

Then you can become an officer and your pay rate will go up a bit.

The aptitude test is pretty simple, it's basically you relating words to others and saying how many boxes are hidden in a certain display.

I'd say look into what you want to do. Go talk to both recruiters and see what is offered. The points about finishing your degree and post-service marketability are important considerations when choosing a branch of service. Not all are equal in what they offer in those regards.

Navy is a good idea.

fun fact: The navy actually considered using this song as a recruitment tool, they got the license but then decided not to run the campaign at the last minute.

America would never cut funding to its military, Obama even increased it.

You are making a good decision on Navy or AF. More academically driven and high tech stuff you can use as a civilian.

Be sure to select a job that you can use on the outside, do not settle for anything less and do not let them talk you into a job you are not interested in. When selecting, ALWAYS think of your future and what the job can do for you on the outside.

As a side note, you may not think it at the time, but you are about to build friendships that you will carry for a lifetime. It was a great life altering experience for me. Good luck

Welp, I visited the recruiter today.  Took the practice ASVAB.  94/99.  Guy was pretty impressed and said if I can repeat that on the real one, I should basically have my choice of occupations...

Talked to my parents about it.  Not thrilled really, but I got a better reaction than I thought I would.

I think I'm gonna go through with this.  I'm supposed to call the recruiter on Monday...but I don't think I'll enlist then.  I might wait until the week after...see if maybe I can get a better signing bonus.

Don't sign until they have promised you exactly what you want ... with that score I'm pretty sure you can get what you want

News and Media makes me think of Full Metal Jacket ... if you consider Intel ask the recruiter about PsyOps, that would definately be my first choice ... the chance of getting recruited by an agency after your service is done should also be considered before you choose ...
