Other than that, France is your best option, considering your present residing. Many houses or even small chateaux, in either case with a fair plot of land, available at affordable prices in regions that will be booming post-recession. You will have to look outside of the popular Brittish regions though (Brittany and Normandy). Try looking at houses in central France or the South-West. Don't go North(-East), otherwise you'll hit the depopulating regions: Frenchies moving out, pesky Dutch moving in, dropping house values and not a fuck to do or see.
If you're in it for the investments and want to stay European, try the Czech republic. Quite beautifull as well, if you have the means to go there on a semiregular basis.
Edit: Beware of Spain! At present the real estate sector in Spain suffers harder than in any other European country, almost comparable to the US. Secondly, Spain has some very odd provincial laws that basically mean you can get expropriated by a (municipal) property developper without an adequate financial compensation. Also, Manyana mentality is much more prevailing on the Iberian peninsula than e.g. France, making it much harder to sort this kind of stuff out.
