I know it's a lossless audio codec that offers superior sounds quality, but it's impractical.  You can't put it on your Zune/iPod/portable media player without first converting it.  As far as I know, you can only listen to FLAC on your PC.  So why am I seeing FLAC all over torrent sites these days?  It's just a pain in the ass to convert the files so they can be added to my Zune or burned to a disc.

If I'm missing something about FLAC here, please share.

Good portable media player often support flac, only apple and MS refuse to implement it.

Zunes and Ipods have bad sound quality anyways, why would you want to put FLACs on them.

You just boasted an F in the subject of choosing a media player.
The idea of any hi-fi system is to reproduce the source material as faithfully as possible, and to deliberately add distortion to everything you hear (due to amplifier deficiencies) because it sounds 'nice' is simply not high fidelity. If that is what you want to hear then there is no problem with that, but by adding so much additional material (by way of harmonics and intermodulation) you have a tailored sound system, not a hi-fi. - Rod Elliot, ESP

Why would you want to download the best-quality music if you're going to be jogging around, with one earphone out, usually in noisy environments? Apple and Microsoft probably haven't gone through the trouble to introduce FLAC support to their mainstream players for the same reason; it's impractical and is realistically a useless bonus. For anyone that uses a portable MP3 player the way it is meant to be used (ergo: not sat in your chair at home with $500 headphones and a pre-amp sellotaped to your iPod), then you're really not going to miss the difference between FLAC and that 320/V0 rip that you have.

so basically if I'm running outside and listening to my Zune (which is my main use for it) I won't notice a difference between FLAC and MP3 on my Zune?  I guess that answers my question.

And to defend my ugly brown Zune, whom I call Poops McBrownly, I got it brand new for $99 from Buy.com.  30GB of storage for $99 is just about unbeatable.  I'm pretty sure I got the deal of a century there.  In fact, I bought two of them.  I realize it's not the best on the market, but for that price, they sure as hell have me sold.

I got the 80gig red zune, I love it, don't let the hates make fun of the zunes
