I need a laptop for the family as ours broke. It will be mainly used by family to browse, word process and my little bro may occasionally play some  low-med spec PC games. 80GB Hard disk will be sufficient.

I have read Lenovo, HP, Sony and Asus are reputable laptop companies. Is this correct? And are there any other laptop companies worth looking at? e.g. Toshiba.

The budget is around £400, preferably less and needs to be a UK website.

I've been looking on websites at refurbished laptops on Currys and PCworld. Are they worth buying? Or shall I just buy new, they do come with 1 year warranty.

Here are some Laptops I've seen. I think the first one is the best. Can you recommend the best one or maybe a better alternative.

Also I'm looking to build my first desktop for Uni, which I start in sept/oct. I will have a budget of around £500 for just the main unit. I would prefer to build it now so I can play some PC games during free time. However, I am willing to wait if any new technology is being released soon, so existing technology is made cheaper. Are any new components/graphics cards coming out soon? (heard ATI bringing out new stuff) Or shall I just build it now?

If you can, get a desktop. You get much more value.

My advice: Spend most of your budget on a desktop that you can take with you when you go to uni (in your dorm or whatever) and then buy yourself a netbook (pick a brand, but I would personally buy ASUS; just don't buy Acer).

The laptop will be for my family, I won't be using it or taking it to Uni. They do need a laptop (no space and they travel with it). My budget is totally separate from their budget, if I spend less on laptop I will still have same budget for desktop.

Can you recommend any laptops for around £400 from above or elsewhere?

Ahhh, OK

I can't recommend you any specific models, but ASUS makes really good stuff. Look for something out of their F5 line. I bought a friend that one (with his money) and he loves it. Great machine. He got a pretty spec'd out model, though. Not really sure what 400 GBP will really get you.
