US Marine Corps...

I haven't even gone to the Air Force Recruiting station near me yet. But I've talked to recruiters both on the phone and at my school.

They are thorough.  They will follow up with these people too.  Expect your former bosses to get calls/interviews to rate your character.
Seriously?

My recruiter said there are far too many recruits for them to actually do that...that the MOST they'll do is cross-reference, and even that isn't likely.  He said if there are a couple people I don't know the addresses of phone numbers for, not to worry about it, that we'll make one up.  I laughed, but he was being serious.
I'm not sure what exactly the person was going for, but my dad had to rate a former employee's character for the Navy I think?  I remember him telling me that a Navy guy came and interviewed him for like 30 minutes about the guy.  This was years ago and I can't remember the exact details but it struck me as odd.
Here in Australia that sort of thing happens for certain positions. They do a crim-hist check on you anyway (which requires every address from the last 5 years or w/e), but for Officer positions and others, they require a number of character references, and they do follow up on everything. They did for me anyway.
Whoa... Can't believe these forums are still kicking.

Lol, I'm currently in the process of applying to become a civilian instructor at my old Air Force Cadet Squadron.. the Australian Federal Police check paperwork went back 10 years for residency.

EDIT: But yeah, best of luck with enlisting

10? I've had mine done twice here in the NT and only needed 5. wat

One was a waiver letting them go dig it up themselves (ADF) and the other was one of the fingerprint jobbies you go down to the station and get done yourself.
