It's a Dell with a 55gb harddrive. My girlfriend loves her movies and i help her get movies from warez but her lappy is full.

I already turned "disk compression' on.

I also ran a disk cleanup. CCleanered' some stuff.

Her movie folder is 20gb.

I thought about maybe raring her folder, so i tested it on 1 movie file. I set compression to BEST and let it run (1 movie took like 10-20 minutes) and the rar file when finished was 699MB!! No improvement. I dont really understand why it didnt shrink the file, but oh well.

Hmm.

Any other ideas? Maybe a compression idea? Erm. Maybe a donation to buy a dropbox 50gb account? Hehe!

edit: just realized that dropbox downloads all info to your comp. so it wouldnt work anyways

well I know many ppl using them for years without issues. There are always bad ones. They are basically internal HDDs in external enclosure. And not seeing lots of WD drives dying are we?

Well another thing is, if she wanted to take it on a trip and watch it in her lap then theres gunna be a cord with a big harddrive hanging out. It seems like it might be a pain in the ass to take around with the lappy

I think it has to do with power. It seems to be very unbalanced. The HDD still works but then its icon vanishes from My Computer like the power is fluctuating.

She needs to have all the movies available all the time?  Too bad.  If she's not smart enough to figure out how to manage her storage system what makes you think she's going to be able to know how to decompress files?  Tell her to: buy/rent a fucking movie; erase the movies she/you downloads after she watches them; get an external drive.

When you really think about it, paying $15 a month for a netflix account that you can get three movies at a time on is way more cost effective than spending 2-3 hours a day downloading movies.  But hey, keep fighting the system!

I did not read "retail" but fail
What will he do with the HDD he uses atm? Reinstall OS, reinstall programs, transfer data,...
seems too much of a hassle besides if you have more than one PC, a spacious, external HDD is a big +

Get her a memory stick with like 64GB on, or whatever they do now.

USB should be fast enough to stream a video.

You could always burn the movies onto physical DVDs.  I have these binder pages that hold 8 DVDs each.  I just take the binder with me if I'm going somewhere where I might want my movies.  Other than having to buy and store the DVDs, there is a plus side - you can just pop the DVD in anyone's player, you don't need a cable to connect your PC to a TV or anything like that.
