lol, Limewire.
(Though I suppose she may not have actually been using Limewire, but that's what is in the picture.)

What website did she use? Obviously not a very good one considering she paid 99c for each song yet was still caught by the police and rapped for illegal downloading.
It always wonders me how people get caught with this shit, I'm guessing most of the time it's because they use stupid websites that make it so easy for the authorities to crack down should they be bothered

That's what she gets
I think they were referring to the cost of each song had she paid for it on the legal market (like iTunes or Amazon).Mekstizzle wrote:

I think it means that she downloaded them with some P2P program but she was shocked at the fine when she saw that to download them legally the price was 99c from places like iTunes etcMekstizzle wrote:

How do they find these people? Do they break down the door and simply look at the computer? Did she turn herself in? What's fucking stupid is I know at least TWO people in law/policing, one of whom is in the family that has illegally downloaded films/music.
Such a waste of money to employ people to do this, I mean who actually fucking cares? Artists who aren't on such a high pay check? Well bad fucking like, learn to do live performances for money.
I think it's disgusting that music has become about the money and not about music - ridiculous.

Fuck that. I always wonder if shit like this will ever happen to me.
Kinda scary =/
80k for each song? That's $60,000,000 for the contents of my iPod alone.

Cracking down on this shit doesn't stop it.
How is she going to pay back that money? She isn't. It will come from some sort of govt. fund/get annulled or some shit and people will continue to download music.
The music industry should give up. They wont win and it's costing them more money than they are making by fighting it.

Whoa... Can't believe these forums are still kicking.
Sucks to be as dumb as her.
The British government are trying to get the ISP's here to become 'Internet Police', they're pretty hesitant though because it involves a fuckload of effort and investment. Don't blame them, especially on an ideological level; letting the corporate-sponsored government interests pry into everything you do with a service that you pay for is a major invasion of rights. Some of the ludicrous assertions they make about 'Cyber policing helping to stop terrorism' etc. are just, quite frankly, hilarious. It's like the "Piracy is funding COMMUNISM!" posters that float around

good. dont break the rules.
Damn, that means that for my frankly pathetic collection of music I'd get fined $171,760,000. Totally proportionate to the crime.
True, but that's excessive. If she shoplifted compact disks, she would not have gotten the same penalty.usmarine wrote:

The music industry has never been about the music. That's why it's called an industry. If you want music that is about music, go to your local clubs. But then, most of them are all musicians trying to make money off their music ... Music has never been been about the music, chief, despite what others may say.Hakei wrote:

But the RIAA does need to learn that cracking down on people like this will not help. Just look at how much money is being made off of single song downloads versus entire albums. It's clear that people don't want entire albums a lot of the time. Hell, material costs are also less this way, too. Most song downloads are also for single song shit. Artists don't even make most of their money off their album sales. It all comes from live performances. The RIAA is operating off of a very out of date and inflexible business model and refuses to update it to cope with the digital world.

Err... got caught? 5yrs of music piracy for me, with no scares except for an 'Excessive bandwidth consumption' formal-letter from my ISP... probably had about 2,500 albums / 50,000 songs before my hard-drive crashed and I (forcibly) stopped. She downloads 24 and gets caught? That's the definition of fucking dumb incompetence.Hakei wrote:

I say they should throw the book at her.
Imagine if you were a music artist and some girl wanted to download your music.
You'd be out of pocket millions!!!

B) too stupid to know it is illegal
C) just plain stupid apparently
It'd be too funny if you got a $4,000,000,000 (50,000 * $80,000) fine for that. Obviously not for you, but just how completely over the top it is would be hilarious.Uzique wrote:
