The global financial meltdown has pushed the ranks of the world's hungry to a record 1 billion, a grim milestone that poses a threat to peace and security, U.N. food officials said Friday.

Because of war, drought, political instability, high food prices and poverty, hunger now affects one in six people, by the United Nations' estimate.

The financial meltdown has compounded the crisis in what the head of the U.N. Food and Agricultural Organization called a "devastating combination for the world's most vulnerable."

Compared with last year, there are 100 million more people who are hungry, meaning they consume fewer than 1,800 calories a day, the agency said.

The world's most populous region, Asia and the Pacific, has the largest number of hungry people — 642 million, up 10.5 percent from last year. Sub-Saharan Africa registers 265 million undernourished, an 11.8 percent increase. Even in the developed world, undernourishment is a growing concern, with 15 million in all and a 15.4 percent increase, the sharpest rise around the world, FAO said.

So will world hunger ever be solved and if so how? I, for one, believe they should be reproducing less. On a side note I have a feeling my girlfriend is going to hit me up for a donation to feed the Filipinos.

people in poor countries produce lots of kids because they believe they will grow up, become a doctor/scientist or whatever and be able to take care of the family, but these families cannot afford the school fee's etc. and the cycle continues.

People in poorer countries who subsist on subsistence level farming or hunting have more children for a variety of reasons. Some of which are lack of education, lack of contraception available, needing more hands to help with problems and various other reasons. What you listed could be one of the possible reasons in some areas but it doesn't apply to Ethiopia or rural India.
Whoa... Can't believe these forums are still kicking.

People always talk about the disparity between the rich and the poor and how it's "growing" but in reality it's probably much better than it ever was in terms of "equality" in terms of looking at things on a global scale. It was much worse back in the day

Interesting how the sharpest rise was in the "developed world" though, that bit was a surprise.

Although I guess the idea of hunger in the developed world is a little different than traditional hunger, aka not being able to buy dominoes anymore
