Interesting article from Tom's Hardware on building a decent gaming machine for around $500.
Worth a read at least.

A few days after I bought my $400 graphics card, a better one came out and the price went down to like $300

This happens often. Also timing after a new graphics card is released. You really have to keep an eye out for certain online stores that start liquidating their supplies of the now older graphics cards. Right now they are getting rid of 800xt, 850xt and 6800 Geforces. When this next line comes out I would look for these types getting them cheap. Of course the 7800 will go down about $50 intially. However in the past some graphics cards have beaten the trend of lowering prices. The 9800 Pro is one of the best examples of a card that has maintained its value for a very long time.

So it pays to be educated and watch the trends. Sometimes buying the newest card or piece of hardware isn't 1337 at all. In fact it's pretty dumb from the viewpoints of those that budget their money.

I got a question though, I know there's different kinds of memory, and some are better and the other, but mine is PC800 RDRAM, and a single 256MB module (4 slots on my board 533Mhz FSB, currently 2, 256 = 512), costs $150, which means another 512 for me to have 1GB of memory would cost me around $315, even with the coarsair select, so why is the one mentioned on that toms hardware site only $56 for 512MB of ram?

Is my current 512 performing much better than the average 512 or what? It does seem so, I've had excelent performance with my current system, even with BF2. And my system is 4 years old. I've only upgraded my 64MB nividia with a 6800 256 GT

I like to use Pricewatch.com and Nextag.com to price things, then I go down to a local vendor and haggle with them until I get what I want.  It works great for when they put up those "We'll match any price!" ads...

First there are different types of memory of the same memory size.
First you get memory that can handle the FSB of the mainboard.
Then you get them in same sizes. Some mainboards have special slots for memory to perform better and faster in pairs. You may notice the DIMM slots having different colors. You match colors in this case.

The point is that in the Tom's Hardware review they are getting cheaper memory of a lower rate and on sale. It may not be Micron or Kingston or Coarsair which are name brands and proven. I have gone with Kingston or Coarsair for three computers now. So I trust them.

I don't explain this very well but there are quite a few articles online that will explain memory choices much better than I. Take a look at http://www.teknews.net

But that dont explain why mine is particularly more expensive. Even though its the same size. Im guessing mine is just faster? Is there really a noticeable difference or what.
