Working on a laptop for a friend.  Think a virus or disk corruption caused pieces of OS and/or Registry to get corrupted.

Symptoms: IE will come up, but crash when trying to go to a website.  Updated IE to latest w/o change in crash.
Desktop Trash icon is not mapped.
CD/DVD would not mount (code 39), but I found M/S solution to fix that.

Virus Scan, RootKit Revealer runs all clean.

Is it possible to reinstall XP w/o loosing all the current installs of other programs and documents?   I feel that I just need an "overlay" of XP to fix this.

Sorry, I should have mentioned that I tried that.  It just led to a DOS prompt.   I thought it would do the overlay....

Also should mention that Firefox works.

Also you used the repair utility, not the Repair Install.

Go Install Windows THEN choose Repair.

Yeah lets all install Vista on hardware not capable of it. That didn't cause a massive fuck up the first time.

I only have a XP SP1 disk (it's a Dell machine btw, with their OEM special CD's).    The SP1 Install appears to want to do a full overwrite, no "repair" feature.  Did the repair come with SP2 or SP3?

did you reformat the HDD?

No, I'm trying to avoid that.  Again - I'm looking for an overlay.  Or maybe something that can clean up the registry (if that's where the real problem is at)

TBH you'll probably spend so long looking for an "easy fix" that you'd probably be quicker just formatting and re-installing.

Sounds like you might just have to suck it up and reformat. TBH, it's your best option. It will also remove all the crap that has built up. Write down a list of programs to reinstall and then see what programs you can export your settings on so that way you can easily get them back to where you want without mucking around with too many things.

Update everything first after you install Windows, install your programs and then run CCleaner and then defrag. My advice to you.

All the Dell machines I've worked on just used an OEM version of the Windows disk.  Other than being from Dell and not asking for a key, the install process is identical to the retail version.

It's not even his laptop. There isn't the luxury of judging how much the data is worth to him vs. the time spent trying to save it - it's not his data.

Well good news!! After running Flaming_Maniac's program the Recycle bin was fixed AND I was able to successfully reinstall IE!!!

Calculator is MIA, but that can be worked out later.

Thanks for all the help!!
