Bertster, I am pretty sure you can run Final Cut Pro on Windows machines ... seem to remember reading it somewhere. But the argument that Macs are better for media development is perhaps over. You can get great media software for Windows just as much as you can for Macs. Perhaps the market is a bit more mature for the Mac side, but both sides can do it.
Well you're pretty wrong then. Final Cut Pro is only available for Macs and can only (officially - you can emulate OSX and run it like that) be run on Macs. It is also the industry standard for video editing. They're also better on the music side due to Logic.CapnNismo wrote:

The whole Macs being better for Photoshop and media in general is complete bollocks, but not when it comes to video editing. Both sides can do a lot of it and in general PCs come out on top. But if you need to do professional level video editing you will be using FCP and you can only do that on a Mac. End of story.

Ah, ok. Didn't know FCP was exclusive. Must have been something else I read about a similar industry-standard program doing both. FCP isn't the only. I've heard of others.
It is pretty much the only one used. My point was that there are things you can only really do with a Mac. I prefer PCs, but I know Macs inside and out and I know there are exclusive software packages which mean many people need them.CapnNismo wrote:

I've done a lot of supporting these studios, they only use FCP. Shepperton, Pinewood, the BBC and every advertising agency I've ever done work for all use FCP almost exclusively.

Interesting. OK then. Quite a shame that it is exclusive to only OSX machines. Would certainly increase market share to make it available to Windows. Guess those goofy EULAs are pretty exclusive only to OSX stuff, though.
Which is why Apple bought the program from Macromedia many years ago (to retain exclusivity, when Macromedia were on the verge of publishing a release for Windows) and now publish it themself. The same is true of Logic.CapnNismo wrote:

Lenovo R500, up the screen to 1680x1050 and get a 7200RPM disk. You can buy one straight from lenovo. Afaik newegg doesn't carry the R series

And it's not just about the software.
I've used professional audio software on both macs and pcs, and I can say that macs perform better. Why? It's in the architecture. pcs will actually move system data over the audio bus if it needs to, where as it's a dedicated bus only for audio on macs.
on topic: macs are really great if you will be doing video/audio editing. Other than that, get something quality that meets your needs.

But Intel did a big boo-boo with paying manufacturers to use their CPUs.
you want a good laptop: Get a Mac Book Pro 2008 version.i cant speak for the new ones with built in 8hr batteries. its pricey but i have mine for almost a year and not one single problem and no OS problems at all. PC/ windows is absolutely crap as of right now. Vista in my job is slow as hell and even XP is way better than that crap. VIsta is just as worse as the Windows ME edition which quite frankly is the most retarded OS ever made. and yes i have been using windows since the 90s. apple all the way. and im not saying that because of the fanboyism that some of these retards here are saying.:blacKOut: wrote:
I want one. I need one.
I'm going to college in about 2 months and I need a laptop. I've been doing a little research for a laptop but nothing that big.
Right now, I'm leaning towards a mac even though I'm a windows user ( I do have some experience with macs though. Graphic Design Class, I suck at it but like it).
I want a good laptop that will last me for a while. I'm gonna use it mainly for work (papers, projects, etc...) and other random stuff, like some form of photoshop hopefully, but not really gaming.
I would like the max price to be around 2000$, maybe even 1500$. But if you wanna post a laptop around 2000$, do it, so I can just look at it.
I just want to get your perspective on what you think the best laptops are at the price range.
Also, if you have the laptop your posting, just tell me how you like it and all that good stuff.
Thanks.

mac book pro's are the cream of the crop laptops behind the thinkpads in my opinion, yes there are some things i dont like about them, it gets a bit hot under the MBP like all laptops. the new MBP has less overheating issues. the screen is okey, a bit to glossy but workable. i got my mac book pro because of its reliability. the touch pad is good but gets annoying when you hear those clicks a mile away every time you push the button. franky im not thrilled of the new touchpad of the MBP. but its good for photo and video editing .
Come back with something intelligent to say. Windows bashing, Windows bashing. Good for everything despite the constant annoyance of everything it does. Oh yea, good for photo editing. My EEE PC 900 is quite good at photo editing, too.specialistx2324 wrote:

Your work computers run poorly on Vista probably because the graphics aren't set up for it. Switch over to classic mode and turn off Aero, see what that gets you. Probably a bit of a snappier OS, I bet. Drop in 2GB of RAM and also see where you stand, too. Once again, it's not the OS that sucks. It's the computer running it.

Actually none of that stuff about the architecture is remotely true.Morpheus wrote:

Take it from someone who's worked doing lots of Mac repairs, they're not reliable. They get extremely hot and have problems with overheating and locking up due to that. On top of that there is the Nvidia bad bumps issue causing a horrendous number of them to fail on one of their GPUs (typically the 9400GS). The glass covered screen is also abysmally bad for doing any sort of photo editing work on, because it's so reflective.
So; poor video reliability, poor CPU life due to temps, poor quality display, a battery that can't be replaced and a gigantic price tag. Then you get to the OS. OSX compared to Vista? You talk about Vista in your job being slow as hell? That's probably because Vista is a bigger more demanding OS than 10.5 and requires more resources by default, that's easily changable and if your IT staff knew what they were doing, would be fine. In any case, corporate use of Macs is stupid. Here is why using Macs in a business environment is pure idiocy (unless you need to in limited areas because of exclusive software):
1. Mac hardware is too expensive to be viable. You are looking at almost triple the price for comparable systems, until you hit the top end where the gap closes.
2. Active Directory is about 50 million times better than Open Directory. OD/AD integration is easy, but still means you need Windows Servers, which overall works better in a Windows dominated environment.
3. You might want to use email at work. Then, since Apples Mail Server is so buggy as to be unusable, you'll need a 3rd party mail server - or you could just splash out and buy Exchange, which is by far the best.
4. Support costs. Macs cost more to support. Despite the fact the support work is much easier (it's why I find it an appealing sector). On top of that failure rates for Macs are higher than for comparable PC systems.
So to recap, you shouldn't have Macs in businesses (as a Mac dominated environment - a few for dedicated roles is fine) because of; overpriced hardware, crap directory services, unusable email (leading to further 3rd party costs) and support costs.

The only thing that has any relevance to that is when macs used PPC processors. Which they don't do any more.Morpheus wrote:

The idea of any hi-fi system is to reproduce the source material as faithfully as possible, and to deliberately add distortion to everything you hear (due to amplifier deficiencies) because it sounds 'nice' is simply not high fidelity. If that is what you want to hear then there is no problem with that, but by adding so much additional material (by way of harmonics and intermodulation) you have a tailored sound system, not a hi-fi. - Rod Elliot, ESP
i'm looking for something like this but maybe a longer battery life and not black and orange? any recommendations? Price isn't a primary concern either.

I like them both and I decided to limit my budget to somewhere around a grand, maybe even 1200$. Doesn't anyone have them? I like the HP and its seems like its getting some good reviews. The lenovo, however, doesn't have a single review....does anyone know anything about that one?

I've had an ASUS laptop for a year and it works fine, pretty sturdy after a couple falls too. My uncle has a Lenovo and not only is it really fast, its really sleek and looks amazing.
I'd go for the Lenovo though, theyre considered the top of the line for laptops right now

Yeah, I just ordered a lenovo. I really didn't consider buying one at the beginning but after doing some research I figured I'd go with a lenovo.Winston_Churchill wrote:

I got my lenovo y550 in the mail today ( and my penn state football tickets online ) . I backed everything up and what not but I have a question. Since i'm heading to penn state on saturday to start early, they are giving me 3 anti virus programs to choose from: Ad aware, Spybot- Search and Destroy, and Symantec Amtivirus (which im guessing is norton but they don't call it that). I already have a free trial of norton on my laptop but I don't want it and want another anti virus one. Which one should I choose?
