Has anyone seen these before? I have about 10 sitting in my cupboard of tech junk that I got for free.

Worth using?

Not really, unless your PSU is sheite.
The idea of any hi-fi system is to reproduce the source material as faithfully as possible, and to deliberately add distortion to everything you hear (due to amplifier deficiencies) because it sounds 'nice' is simply not high fidelity. If that is what you want to hear then there is no problem with that, but by adding so much additional material (by way of harmonics and intermodulation) you have a tailored sound system, not a hi-fi. - Rod Elliot, ESP

He got Corsair which is very good quality. Even if it for some reason failed, likelyhood of taking gfx with it is small.

protector?  is that just a 6-pin shield thingy or something?

I imagine it's some sort of surge protector that has a 6-pin intake and output, to stick into your graphics card and PSU cable.

Worth using I suppose. No harm.

actually it can have some little downsides. + its pointless. Its not like the Corsair PSU is going to secksplode the gfx card....

seems rather pointless given the fact that a GPU also draws power though the mobo

But if it did, wouldn't the mobo short first?  Considering ATI 4800 cards (I don't know about NVidia, haven't kept up with them) take a 24 V connector right to the card from the PSU, couldn't it possibly offer a little protection?

I wouldn't mind having one, if only for the lulz, but don't have paypal + shipping would be ridiculously high.

GPUs draw power from both the mobo (75W for PCIe 1.1, 150W for PCIe 2) and though the PCIe 6/8pin connectors

There isn't a lot that can fry between the power connector on the mobo and the GPU. Chances are that the GPU will fry before the conduits in the mobo are damaged. If the PSU really does cause a voltage surge, everything that is connected will be affected

On the other hand a lot can go wrong in one of these protectors, deteriorating the quality of the power supplied thus causing instability

Also it's 12V. 24V would cause insta-fry

I'd love to see what's inside. Crack the black plastic open and take pics.
