I try to keep my library as organized as possible, but there are a few things that slip through the cracks, and I'd like to fix those. I'll have you know that I choose to "keep iTunes music folder organized" and "copy files to the music folder when added to library". Yet for some reason, a few of these problems still come up.

(1) Problem: Some of the files in my music folder don't have the typical "01 Track Name" file name. Instead it's something like "Track Name (a;dsflhae;jnse)"; the stuff in parenthesis is some sort of ID from the place I originally got the music.
Want: To have those files with the funky file names be called just like everything else, "## Trackname".

(2) Problem: There are duplicates (sometimes even multiples of 3 or 4) of tracks in the library folder.
Want: To remove these duplicates and only have one file for every track.

One possible solution I thought of was to change the directory of my library (where I want iTunes to save everything), use Consolidate Library to copy everything in my library to that new location, delete everything at the original (current) location, then change the directory back to where I really want it (where it currently is) and do Consolidate Library again. However, it seems pretty risky, and could possibly cause more problems in the long run. Plus, I've never Consolidated before, so I'm not entirely sure if it will produce the desired effects.

Halp pls? Thank you

Might help with your first problem: http://www.softpointer.com/tr.htm

Assuming your music it tagged correctly.

For the second problem, if you think that the same file has been added multiple times, in lots of cases, then you could delete your library in iTunes (but keep the files) and then rebuild it.

Somewhere in the File/Tools menu in iTunes, there's an option to "Show Duplicated" Hold down CTRL, and click on all but one of each duplicate file(leave the ones with the most play counts) then hit Delete to get rid of em.

To solve #1, I would use Media Monkey/Winamp. What you can do is manually configure an "external device" which either app will treat like a USB attached MP3 player or the like. What you really do is configure it as a folder on your hard drive. You can then tell the app to export the files in whatever format you wish, a la "<artist>\<album>\<track number> <track name>". At that point, you extract all your files and it will set up a file structure in accordance to the ID3 tag info. Voila, perfectly organized (provided the track names in the tags are clean).

Of my 60gig library, it took me some 7-8 hours total to clean everything up to my preference. It's not extremely efficient work but it's far better then renaming every folder and file.

Uninstall it. And then get a media player that is worth a shit.

Well I did the "Show duplicates" option and it gives me a list of 1500+ songs, so I figure it's working. But when I click "show in windows explorer" for each of the files, there's only one of them, along with the rest of the tracks (and non-duplicates) of the album.

Hmm, guess maybe iTunes isn't seeing these multiple files, yet they're there in my library folder.

EDIT: Oh shi--. Ok, I just realized this. The "show duplicates" option only shows files in your library that have the same artist and track title (and maybe length as well?). For example, I've got a song that's from an original album, and then that song also shows up on a greatest hits album, so there are two of them, even though they're from different places. Or another example, in the GTA soundtracks, there are multiple tracks from the same album titled "commercial", so those all show up as duplicates, even though they're different.

Yeah, the show duplicates goes by actual Artist and song name.

If yourlibrary is so out of contro, you'd probbaly just want to delete the whole library itself, then readd ONLY your main music folder.
