Zune is 15$ a month.
Anyone with legal knowledge know if this is srs?qtrax wrote:
Are the music files downloaded through Qtrax encoded with Digital Rights Management (DRM)?
Yes. DRM allows Qtrax to insure that artists and record labels are properly compensated for their work. DRM means that you can play these music files on your computer or any Windows Mobile devices that you own. However, you cannot directly transfer these files to other users. At the same time, you are always free to share these files with other users via Qtrax by sending them a direct link to download the file. Agreements with the various music rights' holders allow Qtrax to leverage the power of P2P in a way that is 100% legal.
iirc, I was thinking that it is legal, that they were going to use ads to pay for you/us to download the music.Winston_Churchill wrote:
Its P2P, its not legal
I've had that link for about a year or so. When they first launched the beta, it was full of bugs, so I uninstalled it, and haven't gone back to try it since. It's been back up for about 6+ months at least, I just haven't been arsed to bother lately.
Edit: also Bevo, going back and rereading your OP, you didn't mention anything about DRM, but I assumed since you were willing to pay, then DRM wasn't a problem?
Also, I was reading this from their site.
"About Qtrax
Qtrax is the world's first free and legal peer-to-peer (P2P) digital music site. Music lovers can discover new music and legally download full-length, high-quality versions of their favorite songs while compensating both the artists and the record labels through non-intrusive and relevant advertising. Qtrax has the unparalleled support of the major record labels and all of their respective publishing divisions. LTDnetwork Inc, a division of Brilliant Technologies Corporation, developed Qtrax and its components.
Take it with a grain of salt I guess, but I thought it worthy of a look?

Yeah i'll probably keep an eye on it. I don't think Yahoo is dumb enough to have ads on a page where illegal bsns happens. However I don't see the ads paying for the mass amounts of music being downloaded - unless their sponsors offer to pay a portion of each song downloaded.
It makes sense I suppose, more traffic, more advertising, costs more. I just can't see the labels/artists getting 99c for each song being downloaded.
Also @ DRM: No idea wtf that is (some sort of song protection I suppose), but don't really care as long as I can move it onto my iPhone.
Editedit: Interesting.

It sounds legit but the idea of free legal music downloading throws up all sorts of red flags.qtrax wrote:

The Qtrax application is an open source desktop music player built on the Mozilla platform, paired with a music portal site. Most importantly, since advertising supports Qtrax, the artists are always compensated for their work, with licensing that distributes this digital music online.

Can I burn songs I download from Qtrax onto a CD?
No, you will not be able to burn Qtrax music onto a CD. To play songs downloaded from Qtrax you will have to be connected to the Internet and logged in to Qtrax.
Can I put songs that I download onto my iPod/MP3 player?
Yes, you will be able to transfer music onto Windows Media-capable portable devices in the near future.

To make this available for everyone, and everyone be happy? Kudos to them if they can. I can only assume some VERY creative marketing with Qtrax and the music industry/artists.
Here's something else I was just reading: Edit, you covered what I was going to add, lol.

The only reason I haven't bothered with it, I haven't listened to music in close to 10 years, it all sounds the same to me anymore. Backstreet Boys, Boys to men, etc, etc, all that shit turned me off from music. Thanks assholes.
It's ok though, I've got my oldies cd's to keep me happy if I want to listen to anything
Post back if you learn anything more about it.

I looked it up on google and Qtrax seems to be legal. It doesn't have music from many labels, but it does have some of the more prominent ones. I tried to download a song just a second ago and said it was unavailable due to upgrading...
Not that bothered, it's free after all. Will let ya'll know what the quality is like and download speeds etc once it's up..

Hey Bevo, glad you looked into it a bit more.
I thought I remember seeing something about a week ago when I looked, that they were about to release more music soon? I just don't recall the exact date.
Yeah man, keep us updated. I'll keep checking back to see how good it is, or isn't.

A Zune Pass gives you unlimited access to the music at Zune Marketplace and on Zune.net for $14.99 a month.* Play music on up to three PCs and three Zune players for as long as you keep your subscription active. You also get to keep 10 of your favorite songs each month.
So essentially what it's saying is pay $1.49 for a song.

Update. QTrax seems to be close to something - whether grand opening or a complete failure, who knows. Downloads are still unavailable at the moment. I read some blog posts by the creator and he sounds optimistic but then again it would be plain dumb to be outwardly pessimistic.
I had dug out a "coupon" for 50 free music downloads - it seems the offer is no longer available, but I'm trying out a 7 day trial from www.emusic.com. There's a 7 day free trial with 25 downloads. You have to provide CC details but they claim you can cancel at any time during the trial and not be charged. Songs seem to be about $.50 per track if you want 24 tracks per month or if you increase the amount of tracks you want to download per month the price decreases (per track). I don't really like being told how many songs I can purchase during a certain period of time, but it's something to consider if you're buying anywhere from 20-50 tracks from itunes/amazon per month.
I've yet to download anything so I can't tell you what the quality is like, but yes it's DRM. The coupon claimed that it would be mp3 friendly. It may be worth a look if nothing other than the 25 free songs.

I've been using zune for a very long time. It is $14.99 for unlimited and you get to keep 10 songs permanently.. so it works out to like $4.99 a month.Bevo wrote:
Recommendations? Isn't Zune doing an unlimited downloading for $20/month or so?
I'm looking for something with a monthly fee etc so I can download whatever I please, legally. Of course the library would have to be quite large for consideration...
If I just want to play something online (and I'm not around my zune software) I can almost always listen to it at http://blip.fm .

Update from emusic: Downloaded a track from The Cool Kids. 178kbps mp3. Just fine quality for me. They even import it to itunes automatically once downloaded. So far not bad at all, even if I don't like their limit on downloads monthly.
dude, what do you expect... they are trying to sell music.N00bkilla55404 wrote:

If they just offered unlimited permanent downloads for a monthly fee people would sign up for one month every year, and download as much as their bandwidth can handle for a solid month.
You act like you just "caught" them not really offering gigs of music for $14.
