I'm trying to set up a RAID 1 array on my Windows Home Server. Unfortunately I purchased the second HDD after my first was already in use and so I figure to set up the array I must first take an image of my original drive, allow it to be wiped as part of the RAID setup process, and then re-image the newly created array.

If I was at work I'd just use a copy of Norton Ghost, but this is my home equipment I'm talking about so no go there. Anyone know of some free disk imaging software out there? Unfortunately warez/cracks/torrents are not an option for me - I don't like stealing software.

GIS: Acronis True Image. You can download a (fully functional) copy for 30 days free.

yeah Acronis is win although I use Norton ghost, mainly because I'm used to it and am using it for the past 5 years now but its a very complicated software at the least the old version I'm using

Ya we use Ghost at work and I've found it to be fairly easy to use.

However I've realized that my approach may not work. As I understand you have to load special RAID drivers when you first start Windows and as I didn't install with them Im not sure if Windows would even load after the imaging process and the hardware change. I may have to transfer all my files to a different computer, create the array (wiping the disks in the process), reinstall WHS and then transfer the files back.

Ghost and Acronis ftw.

As I said before, we use Acronis at work, but I also use Ghost in school. Students are required to save their work on their pre allocated space on the school data server. Therefore, when ever a moron corrupts a windows install or someone downloads "zomgacoolsong.mp3.exe" we just slap another image on it. It also helps us when setting up a computer lab- we just LAN ghost them all.
