Currently rocking a 15.5" (advertised as 17"... my ass) HP CRT monitor @ 1024x768. I finally have money for a new monitor and I need some help. This will be used for gaming/photoshop/interbuttz, but not movies. Relevant PC Specs:

AMD Athlon x2 5200+ 2.4 GHz
8800 GT, 512mb of course

Im thinking about this 24" Asus. Yes, its 16:9, but the widescreen will be nice for gaming and side-by-side documents. Im concerned that my system will choke on games with the 1900x1080 resolution. And yes, Samsung kicks the shit out of pretty much everything, but theyre too expensive for me.

For newer games like Crysis, how horrid will it look if I play on a low res like 1280x720 on that big of a monitor? Would it be wiser to go with a 22" 1680x1080 monitor?

Other monitor suggestions welcome, as long as theyre ~$250 US.

If you do happen to go 22", I recommend the Samsung 2253BW, should be within your budget also.

Downside is finding a 2253BW anymore, a lot of sites no longer carry it(Newegg and Amazon for 2), New that is.  You can find plently of used models.  Only site I found carrying it new is Zipzoomfly at $256.

On a side note, I was looking at a couple monitors in that range myself.  Came across these in my searches:

Samsung 2243SWX 22"
HP L2208w 22"
ASUS VH242H 23.6" - I believe this is a slightly lower end model then the one you posted though.

Dont know if those will help you any, but once I get my funds together, I'll be picking from them three, so maybe they'll give you some ideas, although seems your looking at a 2ms response time, which all of mine are 5ms, but as far as I can tell, 5ms response time is plently fast for most needs, but take from this what you will

2ms response time won't give any advantage over 5ms. In 95% of the cases, it's just measured differently.

And that 2243SWX looks like a deal.
The idea of any hi-fi system is to reproduce the source material as faithfully as possible, and to deliberately add distortion to everything you hear (due to amplifier deficiencies) because it sounds 'nice' is simply not high fidelity. If that is what you want to hear then there is no problem with that, but by adding so much additional material (by way of harmonics and intermodulation) you have a tailored sound system, not a hi-fi. - Rod Elliot, ESP

If you're gaming you're really going to want the 16:10 ratio, and since you said you aren't going to be watching movies on it, why not try and find one?

Would a 1900x1080 22" or a 1680x1050 22" be better for my purposes (are 24"s worth it)? Would performance be horrible with my rig if I went with something 1900x1080 or higher?

Looked at 2ms because I dont want to get stuck with any ghosting. But if 5ms is good enough Ill go with that

Is 16:9 really that bad?

Taken that...
- You don't watch movies or at least not 1080p movies
- Your vid card is 8800GT 512MB
- 16:10 ratio is slightly more convenient for monitors than 16:9 (some game devs refuse to support 16:9 )

...I'd go for a 22" 1680x1050 monitor. That resolution is afterall very decent for gaming and good for multiwindowing as well. The performance hit in games is quite big going from 1680 to 1920. I recommend going Samsung since they make very good monitors for very decent price.
